Ricochet (Mulcahy, 1991): Denzel Washington, John Lithgow & Ice T

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102789/

I never heard of this flick until I stumbled upon it in the "Wicked Cheap, Wicked Used" section of my local Newbury Comics. After watching it I gotta say I wish I discovered it earlier. It was a great, cheesy, early '90s action flick with a typically great performance by Washington and quite possibly one of the most badass villains of all time played with complete seriousness by Lithgow. The man delivers some great one-liners without even flinching (according to IMDB this was achieved through the use of special contact lenses). Ice T also does a good job at playing Washington's childhood friend who chose a different path in life, but would still at the end of the day be considered a "good guy."

While the film is far from high art, it is still quite enjoyable. Fair warning to those who might someday decide to pick up the R1 DVD put out by HBO, as it has some of the worst picture quality I have ever seen on any video format. Since it was a film I had never really heard of before, I was wondering what some of the other folks on here thought of it. I looked and saw that it was not really a huge commercial success, but it does have a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so there is obviously some type of fanbase out there.

Pretty solid movie! I watched it a lot as a kid on VHS, and recentely rewatched it on Cinemax. Lithgow makes this movie, and Denzel is really great too. One of the many great 90s Joel Silver flicks.

Great movie. Seems to be kind of overlooked for the most part.

I was surprised too considering who its stars are, including Kevin Pollack and that its director also helmed the first two Highlander movies, which have quite a following.

I'm with you guys. This is one of those movies where (If it happens to be on TV) I always have to stop and watch for a little.

Love Ricochet! Always worth a watch, not to mention it was the first movie to prove that Ice-T could be a legitimate actor (He's now on Law & Order: SVU if I'm not mistaken).

Alan Silvestri's music is terrific (a lot of echoes to his score for Predator), John Lithgow proves he can make a great villain, and of course, the return of Mary Ellen Trainer as Gale Wallens (the newscaster from 'Die Hard').

And I do agree with you Ed, overlooked highly in my opinion.

This movie is great, great, great, and great. Ludicrous, yes, but infinitely great and hilarious. Co-written by Fred Dekker of Night of the Creeps fame as well! I like to think that it was a pedestrian legal thriller originally, and then someone snorted angel dust and rewrote it into the zany utter apeshit pile of amazement the movie turned out to be.

If John Lithgow is even half as crazy as he is in this on Dexter it'll be glorious. Between the Star Trek-like fight in the prison (complete with horn-heavy score during scene) and Psycho Lithgow, a bonafide guilty pleasure.

"Did you floss?"
"Yes...with your wife's pubic hair."

I wish someone made a soundboard for this.

Re: Ricochet (Mulcahy, 1991): Denzel Washington, John Lithgow & Ice T

I love this movie too. It doesn't stray too far from the formula, but it's still effective thanks to John Lithgow. He's such a terrific villain.

Great parole hearing scene.
"Mr. Blake, what will you do if you get out of prison?"
"Well, I guess, Mr. Chairman, that first I'll pay a visit to your house."
"To thank me, I suppose?"
"No. To fuck your wife. And your daughter. Hell, maybe even your dog!"
"I don't think that's very funny."
"Then you'll probably hate this."
*BANG*

I love at the fair scene in the beginning when Kevin Pollack does his Shatner impression.

I love how the son of Robert Evans and Ali McGraw plays Blake's accomplice.

I watched this again recently as well. Forgot that Ventura was in this and was reminded of how effective Lithgow is at playing the bad guy. Good movie.

Great movie, definitely flies under the radar. I had seen in on tv a couple years back and then finally picked it up on dvd, when DDD had it for like 50 cents or something in one of their sales.

I remember enjoying this movie in the 90s, but haven't seen it since. I might give it a revisit. I remember Lithgow framing Denzel with a sex tape destroying his marriage and his career.

Unlawful Entry is another fun 90s thriller that is forgotten.

Rented this probably a dozen times from the local grocery store as a kid. Most vivid memory is the phone book sword fight.

I enjoyed this one as well. Caught it originally as a rental and/or on cable. Picked up the DVD some time back and it still sits on my "unwatched" pile. I'll have to get it to in the near future.

I originally saw this in the theater at a $1 theater. Perfect place to see it. It really is zanny...not your ordinary action film.
