Being John Makovich vs. Toy Story is one of the most interesting pairs yet, for me. Basically, each film's premise is something that I think crosses the mind of everyone at one point or another: What would it be like to inhabit someone else, and what if our toys were alive? Each film's exploration of those questions is satisfying and wondrous, and I left the theater each time feeling as though someone had finally addressed something that had been on my mind since childhood.
Ultimately, I gave the nod to Malkovich, though it wasn't an easy selection to make. I cast a few other votes, but I have nothing to say about those.

Goodfellas
Jackie Brown
Saving Private Ryan

I have only seen Schindler's List once, and it didn't seem right voting for The Matrix.
True Romance vs. The Big Lebowski, I like these films equally, so I couldn't vote.

C'mon Tarantino fans, let's get those votes in for JACKIE BROWN and TRUE ROMANCE!!!
The others I went with: GOODFELLAS, PRIVATE RYAN, MALKOVICH, HEAT, TOTAL RECALL, THE MATRIX. I'm not crazy about MALKOVICH or HEAT, but they gave me the chance to vote against TOY STORY and TITANIC.

I must admit voting on these things is getting hader. The Dude vs. Alabama and Neo vs. Oskar Schindler....this shit is getting hard.

Glad to see that Total Recall is finally going to get knocked off. I liked it in high school but man does it not stand up now.

Re: Favorite Movie of the 90's: Round of 32/Group #1
All of these were easy.
Matchup #1
Goodfellas vs Barton Fink- Don't remember much about Barton Fink. It was amusing, but Goodfellas is an opera full of extremely memorable shit.
Matchup #2
The Silence of the Lambs vs Jackie Brown- I love Silence, but Jackie Brown is a virtuoso piece of writing/directing, and acting. It's Tarantino's deepest thematic work and arguably his best film. I still hold to this day that Ordell is Samuel Jackson's greatest performance for which he should've been Oscar nominated. DeNiro disappears into his role as usual. Brilliant brilliant shit.
Matchup #3
Se7en vs Saving Private Ryan- I'm not a big Private Ryan champion, and I'm one of the few people here who thinks the Academy got it right a rare time by giving the award to Shakespeare In Love, but Private Ryan is full of extraordinary war-film moments. I haven't seen it in over 10 years and still shudder at the German shushing the American like a baby with real compassion while he drives the knife into his chest. Not a fan of the screenplay, but Spielberg directed the fucking shit out of that movie.
Se7en is dark, wicked, clever, what's in the boooooooxxx???, but whatever, SPR will be studied in the future.
Matchup #4
Being John Malkovich vs Toy Story- So different, but Toy Story is great classic storytelling, and Malkovich just happens to be an incredibly unique product of a genius. The humor is shockingly good and the characters masterfully drawn. Their emotional needs drive this movie and it's very very compassionate towards them.
Matchup #5
Heat vs Titanic- Heat bored me to tears. Titanic is some sweeping cinematic shit.
Matchup #6
Jurassic Park vs Total Recall- Total Recall is some schlocky shit. Fun, but not better than Jurassic Park.
Matchup #7
The Matrix vs Schindler's List- No comparison. Matrix was pretty cool, but Schindler is a classic piece of art.
Matchup #8
The Big Lebowski vs True Romance- Remember that scene with

I guess since it's favorite movie, it's justifiable that The Matrix will kick Schindler's List's ass --but it still doesn't seem right.
