Friday the 13th part II remake?

Sylvia finds his calling in latest Friday the 13th movie

After showing up as a sloppy, hairy 315-pound beast for his last fight, Tim Sylvia is a natural to be cast as a horror film monster. Fighters.com is reporting that he got a gig in the latest Friday the 13th movie. Yes, we're serious.

Sylvia has been a blogosphere punchline since he was knocked out in 10 seconds by 48-year-old Ray Mercer. He's a favorite of photoshoppers. We can't even imagine what comes now when MMA fans find out Sylvia is the latest Jason Vorhees.

Sylvia does have a return fight in less than three weeks on September 18 at Adrenaline MMA 4 in Iowa. The movie is filming in the Boston area. Here's hoping that filming is taking just a few hours a day and he's actually training for his fight against Jason Riley. Fighters.com says Sylvia is working with Boston-based trainer Mark DellaGrotte.

How would this be a remake if he would be in the sequel to the rebooted franchise?

A-aron 09-06-09 06:39 AM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

I asked Derek Mears (the guy who played Jason in the reboot) and he said that he had not heard anything about this. Wouldn't make much sense, as I got the feeling that they liked how Mears protrayed Jason, and I can't imgine that he was contracted for only one film.

added: this CL ad was pointed out over on the F13 fn boards

Boston Film Productions in association with Mood Swing Films is currently casting for the SAG Ultra-low budget feature "OxyMorons". A very Dark Horror film about the effects of Oxycontin on a family, town and it's inhabitants. After all the rumors surrounding the death of Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger from this particular drug, the mix of local talent, and RED camera photography, this film is sure to be the next Trainspotting or Kids. We are reaching out to the local community for any help we can get. We currently have many TV and radio celebrities from the Boston area contracted into this film as well as former UFC champion Tim 'The Maine-iac" Sylvia. This will be a real Hollywood style production without the attitude, and with a ton of familiar faces. Take a break from "extra work", and get yourself on a low budget production! All cast and crew will receive IMDB credit as well as catered meals, craft service, etc. Each day a 100$ gift certificate to Ristorante Damiano will be award to one of the extra from a random drawing. We are still casting Roles and background talent, as well as crew, for the following dates below. You do not need to be available everyday, but please write in subject line what dates you are available for with headshot and resume to [email protected]

Yep, not happening. Mears posted on his FB that this was a rumor.

So I guess we won't have a Jason that pins his victims to the floor, does leg locks, or crack their bones. Damn.

I was pretty dissapointed in the first one. I am not exactly the horror buff i used to be but it was low budget in my opinion.

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

It's dead:

Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller has confirmed that a sequel to last year's remake of "Friday the 13th" has essentially been canned.

Asked about its status, Fuller mentioned on his Twitter account that the project "is dead - not happening" and later told Bloody Disgusting that "right now there is no movement on Friday 13th: Part 2".

The comments are a complete reversal from those a year ago after the reboot scored a healthy $91 million worldwide and Dunes' reps talked of a script being readied for a sequel that was initially dated for August this year.

********************************************************************

I was hoping to see a sequel that fixed some of the issues I had with the remake, but I don't really care at this point. Nothing could top the originals, so I don't need new entries necessarily.

Doesn't really bother me they won't be doing another but seems a tad surprising I guess. Maybe they'll change their minds in the future.

You know the first couple times I watched it I wasn't that big on it, but after a couple repeat viewings its a little better. Still not my favorite or anything but its watchable.

Why would they not want to make another? It's cash cow.

Was it still a co-production with Paramount and New Line?

Why would the studios kill it when the script was already written?

Studios don't give a shit if a script is written. I'm guessing there's some serious backstory to this. I hope I can find out what happened. I know a few people who run in the same circle as Fuller and Form, so I'm going to try to dig at it.

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

I was meh on the F13 remake the first time I saw it (and reviewed it -- my first DVDTalk review) and liked it less on repeats, but I was interested to see Jason tromping around in the snow, which is one of the ideas that had been previously floated for F13 2 v2.0.

I am also disappointed because it removes any burning impetus for Paramount to finish releasing the series on Blu-Ray.

islandclaws 06-05-13 01:32 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

Bloody Disgusting is reporting that F13th franchise rights have been signed over to Paramount from WB in a new agreement. Paramount only has the rights for 5 years, so a new film may get fast-tracked.

Report here.

DRG 06-05-13 01:49 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

Didn't Warner just acquire the rights to Paramount's F13 back catalog?

I'm also curious if Warner maintains merchandising rights, considering they've been bundling the Jason and Freddy licenses for figures, apparel, and so on.

Matthew Chmiel 06-05-13 02:07 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

Warner has owned the film rights to the franchise when New Line acquired the property in the early '90s. However, Paramount sold them everything but the title. That's why their sequels were called Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X, not Friday the 13th: Part X - Jason In Space. Paramount co-financed the reboot with Warner.

Warner is now distributing all of Paramount's catalog titles onto Blu-ray, that's why we're seeing a boxset come out later this year.

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

Friday the 13th were always my favorite slasher films. I remember the last one was jokily in continuity with the Transformers films. All directed/producted by Michael Bay. Guy who was Megan Fox's character's boyfriend was in F13 & he had the same truck that he had in Transformers. So after Mikaela dumped him for Sam, he went out to the lake & got murdered.

Mike86 06-05-13 02:35 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

I've gone back and forth on the first remake so many times. It has certain elements to it that I don't mind but a lot of it pisses me off the more times I watch it. It just doesn't have the same fun/campy factor as the original films. The prologue is great but it goes downhill pretty fast afterwards.

That being said I'd still be interested in a new film just because Friday the 13th is probably my favorite horror franchise.

It's a three year home video distribution deal. (Which includes around 600 titles.) After the three years, the distribution returns to Paramount.

Not sure what to make of this other than Paramount doing what it has always done in the past when it came to the franchise that saved their ass, so many times ... another film to milk.
Sad thing is the film will probably be ass, but people will pay and that's what Paramount banks on.
The remake was shit. They took cliche to a new level and extended it (sex scene) and brought over a little Bubba Sawyer in Jason's character.
I say if Paramount wants to do it right, slash the budget in half, use unknowns, use practical SPX rather than shit CGI and get some old school style in there. Hell, get Ti West to write AND direct.

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

I'm hoping that since the universal word amongst fans is the remake was shit (which it largely was), Paramount just makes another sequel to the original timeline. Based on how most of the sequels are, they don't even have to do much to establish continuity. Just pick right back up, put him in the goddamn snow, and make a movie about teens getting killed. This thing writes itself.

This would be ideal if you ask me. Although if it were up to me I would just choose they also ignore or don't mention much from the events of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday or Jason X as I really didn't care for either of those. Although I suppoe it isn't like there's a lot of continuity between these films to begin with. But yeah, the remake wasn't the best and I'd prefer to ignore it.

Just reading this thread and saw this post. That could be an interesting change of scenery for the series. I'd be interested in seeing something like that happen.

I think taking off from Jason X would work perfectly. They did show 'Earth 2' in the end and who is to say, like always, Jason didnt survive. Takes place in the future and Jason has new stomping grounds. Keep some 'parts' of the Uber suit as well as an 'under-suit' and have him get some new threads to cover up.
Have him pull a Myers and break into a store that just so happens to have hockey masks ... go from there and tear some shit up !

True enough I suppose. Honestly I guess aside from being cheesy as shit Jason X wasn't that bad. Jason Goes to Hell is a piece of crap though. Easily my least favorite of the franchise.

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

JGTH was easily the worst idea. Kane liked the costume but he was hardly in it and the whole soul jumping idea was just awful. Not even sure why Adam Marcus thought it was a good idea.
Amazes me that Sean S. Cunningham let it fly other than simply not giving a shit and figured it was the end of Jason forever.

islandclaws 06-05-13 10:29 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

Adam Marcus liked it because it subverted the entire F13th franchise. Just look at what he did with the new Texas Chainsaw...

They really don't need to pick up from anywhere. Open with the tale of Jason Voorhees like VI did (it was VI, right?) and re-establish his rough continuity. Don't even include clips from JGTH, X or remake for all I care, just a brief reminder we're back in the real timeline. Cut to someone who isn't important to the story being killed for the expected opener, then we get a group of bros, nerds, and snow bunnies heading to the lake for some winter activities. Mayhem ensues. Hell, maybe throw the fans a bone and have an older, grizzled Tommy Jarvis appear in the third act as a hero.

Mike86 06-06-13 01:52 AM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

I always did sort of expect that Tommy would have appeared in another film after Jason Lives. He's one of the better hero characters of the franchise and I wouldn't mind seeing him back again. Especially since he was so deadset on killing Jason in Jason Lives it could have been a pretty easy way to bring him back when he found out that he came back yet again. The only thing is I would guess he'd be killed off since obviously Jason won't ever truly be killed off.

If they went with the idea and somehow got Feldman to agree to reprising his role that would be kind of cool.

islandclaws 06-06-13 12:47 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

No. Feldman's days of convincing acting are over. Recast it, which they would do anyway.

Mike86 06-06-13 01:17 PM

Re: Friday the 13th part II remake?

It's not like you expect the best acting in this type of film anyways. Besides he can be okay sometimes still in my opinion.
