Re: David Fincher's "The Social Network"

The script by Sorkin is actually borderline fantastic. There is still work that needs to be done from the draft that I read, but it's very character and dialog driven; like most of Sorkin's work. It's very heartfelt and contains a lot of his great dialogue (I'm assuming we will have points in the film where the camera constantly follows the characters as they talk), but my following comment is going to ruin the film, so read at your own risk.

Spoiler:
The entire film is about the downward spiral of Mark Zuckerberg to the point where he's completely alienated all of his friends and ends up completely alone. It does not portray him in a "positive" light, but Sorkin's script actually makes you feel for the guy. The casting is inspired at this point, but I don't know if Justin Timberlake will have what it takes to play the "bad guy" that initiates Zuckerberg's downfall. Sorkin writes Parker as a douchebag that the audience loves to hate, someone who has past their prime, but has enough "wisdom" to guide the lead character. The dialog that Timberlake will get to spew out is some of the best in the script, but I don't know if Timberlake has the acting abilities. I guess we will see though.

I'd like to say I trust Fincher here, but after the lackluster Panic Room and the complete borefest of Benjamin Button, I'll wait until I see a trailer before I pre-pay in my mind.

I'm still not convinced that the film will be good but that poster is pretty cool.

I forgot Michael Cera-lite was starring in this. I honestly don't see how this could make for a good film, but if it got Fincher interested then maybe there's something there.

That's what I'm hoping. I hope he can come back from that last one; I know people liked it but I thought it was heavy-handed and melodramatic.

love that teaser poster. I have no facebook/myspace, but i'm really excited for this film. Fincher always delivers something good. I even like Button.

I'm really looking forward to this. I love Fincher, and Sorkin, and Eisenberg. Also, I've heard this movie depicts the Facebook guy as a loser who only cares about impressing women, and anything that can tarnish that guy's name even further is worth checking out.

Oh I see, interesting. Is that the kid from Adventureland? I like him better than one-trick Michael Cera. Fincher hasn't disappointed me yet.

But his last "based on facts" movie was Zodiac, which was fantastic

It might just be me but I refuse to believe that the story about Mark Zuckerberg is even one tenth as interesting as the Zodiac Killer.

Also, the book this is based on sucks.

So when will we get a movie about the PayPal guys? I think there was six of them. And one produced a couple movies. I hear they killed a guy. Should make a good movie. You heard it here first (mostly because it's not true).

I don't use Facebook nor Myspace. And I think that both are for (insert homophobic slur)s. But this sounds like it's going to be about a guy who is kind of an asshole, and makes a social networking site so that he can make friends.

so, are you a homophobe? Uneeded, unless you're really making a point.

I actually understand why the facebook haters could not want to see this. I think it'll be interesting to see the negative light Fincher will undoubtedly shine on the subject.

Um... his story is actually far more interesting than the Zodiac Killer's. In fact, "Zodiac" was about the cops, not the killer.

How would you know? I would suppose from your prior comment that you haven't read it.. I don't know, because I haven't read it either.

All that said this movie causes VERY mixed emotions for me. I'm dying to see it but heartbroken by it. I wrote a screenplay very loosely based on Zuckerberg (kind of like how Boogie Nights is loosely based on John Holmes but spins in another direction). I had no idea that this subject would inspire a major motion picture and figured I was onto an interesting spin... but alas Sorkin and Fincher stole my thunder. Feh. I gotta see it, though, because I know that the story is pretty outrageous and will be terribly fun.

No. Was still polishing when this movie was announced. I'm not in any way trashing them... I was just surprised that anyone else was actually going to make a movie about a computer guy. I fell under the delusion that I had an original idea. Though my take on the story would have been very different from this because I was heavily fictionalizing (and stylizing) it and they're making a biopic.

I may salvage it yet by changing his invention so that it's not a social networking site, but some other thing. Maybe an

I need to shut up and not give my ideas away!
