How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I know the term "classic" may have different meanings to different people. But, thinking about the ones that, though made a long time ago have stood the test of time and are still revered today.

take that as you like and think about just how many times you've seen the oft talked about, behemoths of cinema.

for me, as much as i love these movies and think they are great and should be in the anals of cinema lore i just don't have the urgency to see them as much as you would think (of course the below are merely estimates and i am talking about seeing the movie in whole, not just bits here and there)...

Casablanca...3x-4x (adore this movie, have this movie, but just not often viewed)
The Godfather...5x
The Godfather II...3x
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly...1x (sadly, one of my all-time favorites, have the latest, best release and have not gotten around to seeing again. started my love for Westerns. maybe because of the intimidating length, who knows. but, i do love this movie)
Once Upon a Time in America...1x (again, love it, but intimidated by length)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...3x
Star Wars Trilogy (original)...50+
Seven Samurai...1x
Psycho...2x
Citizen Kane...1x
To Kill a Mockingbird...1x
Touch of Evil...0x (have it, love Orson Welles, just haven't got around to watching, sadly)
The Great Escape...0x
Duck Soup...0x

more to come...

Also, not limited to "my" list. think of any and all and list your times...

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I'll play.

Casablanca
Twice. Not a big favorite.

The Godfather
I'm gonna say between 9 or 10.

The Godfather II
Three times (For sure) Reason for certainty is because this was, for awhile, the longest movie I had ever seen.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
Well over 15 times (The American-truncated version, that is) I know every line of dialogue in it...Well, I might stumble with some of the line-memorization at the Yankee compound near the end. This is obviously one of my most favorite films ever.

Once Upon a Time in America
Saw the "Butchered" version once. I've seen the complete cut only about twice.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
If I recall correctly, I think the 2-Disc release was the first time I saw it in it's entirety. Saw bits and pieces (Especially the ending) numerous times through the years. I think I've only seen the whole thing from beginning to end about 3 times.

Star Wars Trilogy
I've got Empire memorized (Taped from TV from the 80's and watched the hell out of it) Interestingly, I don't think I've seen the original, unaltered
versions of the other two movies no more than about 5 times.

Seven Samurai
Hmmm. Maybe about twice. Double that amount with the Michael Jeck commentary on.

Psycho
Wow. I think I've only seen it twice. First time in the 80's. Second time in '04 (For the first Horror Challenge) Hard to believe since I love the movie a lot. Still need to get the new DVD.

Citizen Kane
Once without Ebert's commentary. About 4 times with Ebert's commentary.

To Kill a Mockingbird
Twice.

Touch of Evil
Director's Cut-Once
Theatrical Cut-Zero

The Great Escape
Twice and a half (Last time I had it on, I channel-surfed til the breakout. I LOVE the scene where Attenbrough gets--Deservedly--pissed off at Bronson for the constant roadblocks in the tunnel)

Duck Soup
About 4x
Definetly my favorite Marx flick.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

Of the movies you list, I've seen One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest once, Psycho a couple of times and the Star Wars trilogy too many times to actually count. I've seen none of the others.

My Other Self 09-02-09 08:31 PM

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

Duck Soup I've seen like 1000x. Star Wars trilogy I've lost count. Good, the Bad, and the Ugly probably a dozen times. The others I don't know.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

Casablanca
Once only, and very recently. I think I'll be seeing this a lot more in the future.

The Godfather
One-and-a-half times. Gave up halfway through the first time. One weekend sat down to see the whole trilogy with an ex and the second disc of Pt. II had DVD ROT.

The Godfather II
Half. See above.

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly
I always get about 80% or 90% through. :(

Once Upon a Time in America
Never seen it.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Same

Star Wars Trilogy
Dozens of times over the past 20+ years.

Seven Samurai
Once. I liked it. Still own it.

Psycho
I saw the van Sant version in theaters. Does that count?

Citizen Kane
Once, but it's been a while. Saw it a few months after the R1 DVD came out.

To Kill a Mockingbird
Touch of Evil

Never seen them.

The Great Escape
I've seen the first 15 minutes.

Duck Soup
Never.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

No clue. My memory stinks. All I can say for certain is that "Duck Soup" is the only one of those titles I haven't seen ...or any of the Marx Brothers films for that matter.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

oh my bad...

i wasn't merely talking about just my list. i mean ANY "classics" you've seen or not seen. any you want to list so we can see how many times you've seen that particular movie...

I've only seen Casablanca once, a few months ago. I loved it; I'll definitely be watching it again and again. I've seen Psycho and Citizen Kane at least half a dozen times each, and have never seen any of the other films that you listed.

Star Wars Trilogy (original) - 1x or 2x each
Seven Samurai - None

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I don't think I've seen any film more than 10 times, and very few films more than thrice.

Of the films listed so far, I've probably seen the Star Wars trilogy 7-10 times, and none of the others more than twice.

Alien might be my most watched movie, of maybe ten times.

There are too many great movies to watch the same ones constantly, in my individual opinion.

Rad14 09-03-09 07:56 AM

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

The Godfather - about a thousand times, I'm sure
The Godfather Part II - probably the same
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - hundreds of times
Citizen Kane - hundreds
Alien Trilogy - probably hundreds
Casablanca - dozens of times
GWTW - probably dozens of times
Ben Hur - dozens
The Exorcist - thousands
The Shining - hundreds
Plus, I saw most of these a lot in the cinema before VHS and DVD even came out, and on TV before that!!

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

Most of these movies I've only seen once. I have only been deeply interested in film since 2003 or 2004, so I've been playing a lot of catch-up (plus when I started, my awareness wasn't very good). The number one complaint or criticism I see directed at amateur or upcoming film critics is that they haven't seen enough great movies, so I try to work on that all the time.

I've seen The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Citizen Kane and The Alien series at least twice though. I haven't seen Gone With the Wind, but this Blu set they have coming out at the end of the year looks like my time to change that.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I have seen all of those once except the Star Wars trilogy several times and The Good The Bad And The Ugly more times than a person probably should. My second favorite movie ever behind Blade Runner.

I have seen numerous films in this genre, but I don't believe we're allowed to discuss them in this forum.

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I'll add my own "classics" that I got around to buying on DVD thru the years...

01: Yankee Doodle Dandy (1943)
Saw it for the first time two years ago, and have seen it at least 10 times, and even went out and bought the soundtrack

02: Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939)
I love James Stewart from this period - (other films like "The Shop Around The Corner" and "You Can't Take It With You" are great, but I haven't bought them yet) so young, so earnest, and quite inspirational, this film is. I watch it at least once or twice a year.

03: It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
forget about it. I can't count on my fingers and my toes combined how many times I've watched and loved this movie. It beats "Mr. Smith" out of the park for inspirational, and that's saying a lot. George Bailey, James Stewart's character (like duh), sacrifices his whole life for other people, and in the end, well.... all his good intentions didn't lead to Hell like it does most folks.

04: The Wizard of Oz (1939)
This was a childhood favorite of ours, all of ours in the neighborhood. The one family that actually had VHS in the late 1970's had the movie, and we'd go there to watch it most every day between the years 1979 and 1982. As a grown-up, I'll pop it in once a year...but my 6-year old son is still scared of the witch, so I can't watch it around him.

05: The Godfather (1972)
I got into this movie in my teen years - my mom had taped it from network TV, and I used to pop it in and become quite fascinated at how people can change - and not for the better.

There's more...until later...

Re: How many times have you seen the "classics"?

I've seen each one of these (my all-time favs) at least 5 times, and most of them over 10 times. A few get watched at least once a year.

The Third Man
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Field Of Dreams
A Face In The Crowd
Seconds
2001: A Space Odyssey
Vertigo
The Thing ('51)
La Dolce Vita
Night of the Hunter
A Matter of Life and Death
The Swimmer
Greed
Nashville
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers
Day The Earth Stood Still ('51)
The Killer (John Woo)
Blow Up
Metropolis

...and then, there's probably dozens of other movies I've watched multiple times - good, bad, campy, guilty pleasures, etc.
