Columbia Pictures is developing a third installment of the high-octane "Bad Boys" franchise, tapping Peter Craig to pen the screenplay.
The hope is to have a script that would reunite director Michael Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. At this point, with the project in the early stages, none has a deal to return.
The "Boys" movies feature Smith and Lawrence as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, caught up in cases involving car chases and explosions.
The first "Boys," released in 1995, helped launch Bay as a director and Smith as an action star even though it was not a fire-stamped blockbuster -- it grossed $66 million domestically and $141 million worldwide.
The sequel, released in 2003 when Bay and Smith's stars had risen, grossed $138 million domestically and $273 million worldwide.
All parties have expressed a willingness to return if a story can be hammered out. One potential hurdle, however, would be the costly deals with the players.
Craig, repped by CAA and Management 360, co-wrote "The Town," which Ben Affleck is directing for Warner Bros. and which shoots in Boston next month. He is adapting anime "Cowboy Bebop" for 20th Century Fox and Keanu Reeves.
Sgt. Butterman is surely counting down the days till this.

Yeah like they really need a "story".
A two hour car crash/explosion/chase sequence with lots of "cool" banter will suffice.
The hordes will flock to this dreck.

Please bring back an awesome score, like the first one had. That score gets me pumped up. I was soooo let down by the music/score (can't even remember it) in Bad Boys II. Other than that, I give the flick a thumbs up.
Bring on another.

If this is like part one and nothing like the craptastic part two, yes. If this keeps Michael Bay away from a third Transformers movie, hell yes!

I'm in if Smith/Lawrence and Bay are. Enjoyed the first two, although the 2nd one ran 20 minutes too long.

I'll have to watch the first one someday.. never seen either one.
I did hear a rumor somewhere that this might include Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley teaming up with the Bad Boys. Would they call it "Beverly Hills Boys"? Or "Bad Cops"?

I mirror fumanstan here...the first one was awesome, the second one...not so much.
It shouldn't be hard to get Martin Lawrence attached, he's probably begging for work.

Bring it on. Say what you will about the second one, but it is a great action flick. Smith and Lawrence have incredible chemistry.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=badboys2.htm pretty good. Worldwide it doubled its budget, and the DVD seems to be one of Sony's biggest sellers (multiple iterations of it too: 2-disc, 1-disc and double feature with Bad Boys I).

But if you have a film that opened at $46 mil and done $138 domestic total that does not sound good to me, that's a hell of a drop for a film that was in the cinema for 18 weeks. It's not like it belongs to the $200 club!
Also, I would hate to think what they spent advertising it. They had boards evreywhere. If they are saying that to advertise Shutter Island would be approx $60mil I would hate to think the cost of BBII. In a year that Inglorious Basterds took a $38mil opening on a $70mil budget, a 3rd film doesn't make a lot of sense. But Bay does have a good track record of not overrunning on budget or schedule.
I love the film (though that 15 min rat scene could go) saw it twice at the cinema, have it on DVD and am still wondering why no BD, so bring on number 3.
Just find it hard to say the second film made tons of money
EDIT: on a slightly related note. Looking at Brad Pitts box office opening weekends I see that Babel had an opening weekend of $389,351, while Cool Worlds opening was $5,556,451!
Makes you think!

Bring back the goodness of BB and leave out the overblown and drawn out BBII.

The car chase from BBII was great, the rest not so much. Bay went into BB with something to prove and made a great action movie. With the sequel he went way overboard with everything as he did with Transformers 2. Hopefully they can get it right again, otherwise this is gonna be craptacular.

I can't believe anyone in the world would want Bad Boys III to be less like Bad Boys II. The ridiculous indulgence that defines BBII is exactly why anyone should bother making a BBIII. If it's anything less than five times as bombastic, then count me out.

Bay hasn't made a good movie since BB2, so this could be promising. I know all of you are saying it should be 20 mins shorter than BB2, but I say it should be an hour shorter...a 90 min BB3 could be the coolest movie ever!
