Agreed. Also noticed too that once you've seen it and know how things play out, its easier to follow the plot and characters as well.. Also found it amazing that the opening sequence is about 25 min long, as it doesn't feel that long at all, the dialogue and the tension are so good that you lose track of time.

I just watched this for the first time tonight. Went in with High hopes but came out feeling disappointed. I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as people are saying.

Well, I'll try this again (for some reason my last post was removed, along with a few others, not sure why):

It happens. I know many loved District 9 but it never really grabbed my attention...

It grabbed my attention quite well, then over the course of the film lessened its grip and by the time it had degenerated into transformers 3 for the third act, I had checked out. But the first hour was near-brilliant.

That is true, the first act was pretty damn good, but yeah, as it went on, it did go downhill.

D'oh! Almost forgot to respond to this:

Well, first things first:

Spoiler:
I never realized how unstoppable Hugo was! I thought the burly, female german instantly killed him when I first saw this in theaters, but the slo-mo-replay shows that he turns around and kills both her and the German in the middle....With a pair of bullets still lodged in his back!

But still...
Spoiler:
Who does Erik shoot at with his shotgun? It sure looks like he's aiming at the allies' table which is odd because I swore he was in on the plan with Bridgette since he used Mathilda (The barmaid) to occupy and distract the soldiers at the other table. And the implications on how he slowly and sneakily reached for his shotgun when Hicox's cover was blown. Yet, during the shoot-out, it looks like he intended to kill Hugo while Wicki (The other Basterd) ends up shooting and killing Erik (!?!)

I think he was just trying to defend his turf. I never got the assumption that you did about him and Bridgette. He was a french bar owner, who served those who came to his bar. In that moment he was going to take care of those that would visually seemed to be the cause of the mayhem.

Finally got to see this one last week, and I have no problem going the full monty (*****). Second favorite movie of the year so far, behind only (500) Days of Summer. Going to love to revisit this one.

I'm assuming she didn't get the style and from what it was influenced from. That's what I see from people I know who just didn't get it.

Finally saw this on BD.

I enjoyed the film a lot, but I can see how some people wouldn't care for it basically turning into a comedy in the final act.

Uh, comedy in the final act?

Spoiler:
You were laughing when Shosanna dies? Or when Landa kills the German actress with his bare hands?

Black Comedy

Spoiler:
You weren't laughing at Pitt's ridiculous routine, or the fact that there was no security to speak of at such an event, and with such obvious shenanigans going on?

Those were humorous elements, but I still wouldn't say the film turned into a comedy.

It gets too ridiculous by that point to take seriously, for me. Still enjoyable though.

Of course you picked the scenes that weren't comedy, but the Basterds scenes were reminiscent of the Marx Brothers.

Re: Inglourious Basterds (Tarantino, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

Watched this again the other night... this time I put my television in monochrome mode for the third chapter, "German Night in Paris." In the original script, it mentioned that this part was to have been in b&w so it would come off like French new-wave. It worked quite well within the context of the film and I sort of wish he would have left it that way.

This movie definitely improves on subsequent viewings; particularly the long dialog scenes like Landa and the dairy farmer, the restaurant scene, and the bar scene, which sort of surprises me.
