This is a good reminder of a sage piece of advice I once heard: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Anyway, I'm 38 years old, an 80s teenager. I was 13 when 16 CANDLES came out, a Freshman starting High School when I first saw THE BREAKFAST CLUB in first-run theaters, and just getting my drivers license when FERRIS BUELLER became huge. His movies really were an integral part of my teenage experience, as even in their absolute silliness they reflected a certain undeniable truth about the joy and idiocy of being an American teenager. I grew up with them, they were the soundtrack of almost every 80s kid. Those movies were part of the vocabulary of the era. They were oblique slices of reality, but valid ones nonetheless.
It's not so odd to me that, by the late 80s/early 90s when my generation reached adulthood/20s, Hughes switched entirely to producing family comedies. He probably had said all he needed about the teenage experience. I don't blame him. He received critical and commercial success with PLANES TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES, UNCLE BUCK, and of course HOME ALONE (as writer/producer). But I don't think he ever captured the essence of the times so vividly as he did with his 80s "teen" movies.
Man. What a bummer.

That sucks. I'd always hoped he come out of hiding to do some retrospective interviews or record audio commentaries for his movies.

Sad News
Planes, Trains and Automobiles was the last film I really liked by Hughes....his career reminds me of Preston Sturges in that both were on top of their game for a short period of time and then suddenly they both seemed to lose it, never recapturing that magic.

Nicely put, Matt.
Even though his movies are rooted in the 80's via music and fashion, pretty much anyone can identify with the antics he put up on the screen. You knew his movie would have a happy, sentimental ending but who cares when you have such wonderful characters to take you along with their awakenings.
RIP John. Thank you for Farmer Ted, hijacked parades, pillows that are not pillows, educational detention hall, giant pancakes and the ability to completely burglar-proof a house in 1 hr. Thank you so very much.

The guy definitely holds a place in my heart. Almost all of his films are staples of my childhood. Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, and Planes, Trains.. are in constant rotation at my house. He defined a genre and honestly nobody else has really been able to replicate the stream of hits he had over the span of the 80s.
Sad to think his last film that he directed was Curly Sue, and the last one he had any help on was Drillbit Taylor. Blah.

Very sad to hear this even though he's basically been retired for years, what a fine run he had in the 1980s.

As another 80's teen, I'm deeply saddened by this as well. I just picked up "Ferris" on Blu and it's sitting in my unwatched pile. Gonna move it up to the top now...

I really can't believe it. When I went on CNN at lunch I was dumbstruck. I just was not expecting this.
John Hughes was the one of the main reason that me (and I know for a fact) many others went into Film School. More than any other writer/director he was able to capture the irony and poignancy of growing up. And even the pitfalls of later life. He had an uncanny way of taking the monotony of the everyday and making it hilarious and memorable. There will never be another John Hughes.
Today is a sad day... the geek in me always hoped that he would make at least one more film... but atleast we have his cannon of almost perfect films and his lasting impact.

Like many us of us, I always hoped for a third act in Hughes film career. Clearly he was content with the great work he put forth in the '80s and '90s, and sought out other challenges.
So very unexpected. So very sad.

Dear George Lucas,
You can stop raping my childhood now, for it has just died this morning. Show some respect.
Sincerely,
Jeff.
