Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!

Saw the trailer for this tonight. Looks like a fun documentary.

EDIT: Updated the OP with a trailer that won't be taken down.

I picked up the region 2 DVD a few months ago and LOVED the movie, highly entertaining (even WITH Quintent Tarantino being interviewed, usually everytime he says "alright" a movie gets less enjoyable).

ONly issue is you'll watch it and then want to hunt down all the movies featured, which will end up costing you some $$, at least, that's what happened to me.

i need this movie in my life! i read in an interview that synapse recently got their hands on most of the films featured so hopefully we'll get some r1 releases in the near future.

Every time Tarantino says about this film or that my interest in the those movies gets them in my Amazon cart.

I was interested in watching the preview, but whoever produced it had it pulled from YouTube for a copyright violation. Fucking brilliant marketing.

I saw this in a packed theater in Toronto last year with a bunch of movie nerds. The best way to see this movie. The director was there and told some stories of the making of the film. The most amazing thing to me was that he got a hold of Tarantino and they had their interview the next day. I had assumed that Tarantino would have re-watched these films to have so much to say about them.

That's awesome news. The first 30 seconds of the trailer had me jumping in my seat when I saw it last night :)

Lame! You can still search for the trailer under "Ozploitation" if you want to see it.

That looked fantastic. Though I'm embarrassed to say I only recognized a handful of movies there. Anyone suggest a "must-see" list of films that fit here?

Good lord, you can find the entire thing to watch online in about 30 seconds. That's insane.

Hugely entertaining doc. Loved it.

Anyone care to recommend some essential ozploitation to track down?

I recently listened to a podcast that had an interview with this doc's director:

Definitely sounds interesting.

I'd recommend:

Night of Fear
Stone (inspired Mad Max quite a bit as there's ideas lifted from it)
Mad Dog Morgan
Patrick (better than Road Games I think easily)
Thirst
Mad Max
Razorback

yep he comes off as a nerdy fanboy throughout. I think the director of the doc went to him for help not expecting any and he funded it.

Re: Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!

here's an Australian horror movie that was too good for Not Quite Hollywood obviously:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fTVIoHum4w0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fTVIoHum4w0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

"What sort of arsehole would do that" is a classic line though.

I like Quentin in interviews like this. He just looooves movies and he knows a hell of a lot about them - in every genre.

Watched my copy of the movie yesterday. Really enjoyed the documentary and thought it was really well done. I did enjoy the fact that it was broken up into sections, so each part of Aussie Exploitation got some insight/love.

Gotta love the anecdotes about Jimmy Wang Yu being an asshole

You hit the nail right on the head. After watching the film, I added about 12 films to my wish list :)
