Spielberg to Remake 'Harvey'

This was reported earlier today but I couldn't find a thread. If there is one feel free to close.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Steven Spielberg will soon be seeing imaginary rabbits.

The filmmaker will direct as his next film a contemporary adaptation of Mary Chase's play "Harvey," about a man and his friendship with an invisible, six-foot tall rabbit.

20th Century Fox and DreamWorks will co produce the project. Novelist Jonathan Tropper ("The Book of Joe") has written the adaptation for the new version.

"Harvey" was first adapted for the screen in 1950 with James Stewart in the starring role as Elwood P. Dowd. He received an Oscar nomination, while Josephine Hull took the prize for her supporting role.

No casting for the remake is in place yet; filming is set to begin early next year. Spielberg was last in theaters with 2008's "Indiana Jones" sequel.

I never saw the original so I could care less. I just really wanted his Lincoln biopic next.

Hasn't Spielberg learned his lesson with remakes?

I can't see "harvey" being remade in this day and age, maybe it just me.

But if it is A Speilberg movie I'm sure people will go see it just for that.
It will always be A classic from the 50's with Jimmy Stewart in my book.

I'm interested to see what he does with "Oldboy" and Harvey.
But I have A strong feeling that the orginals will be my favorites forever.

I can see Tom Hanks playing Elwood P. Dowd in the remake.

Really?

He should leave both properties well enough alone. He will completely de-fang 'Oldboy' and god knows the sentimentality/ shmaltz he will bring to 'Harvey'.

Hopefully neither of these projects see the light of day.

Ugh.

Doesn't Harvey already have sentimentality and schmaltz? It just does it really well. I'm more interested in this than I am the Lincoln pic.

Of course.. and yes.

Thus no need waste our time with a Spielberg version.

And yeah... I too am dreading his Lincoln biopic.

Harvey is one of my favorite films, eclipsing even Harold Lloyd films and On Borrowed Time.

Maybe next Spielberg can remake Rope, and use Shia Lebouf to play every role. That'd be a real treat for all.

I thought a Harvey remake was already done. Wasn't it called Donnie Darko.

Ugh. Leave it alone! What's wrong with the original that it needs to be remade? Does it need to be updated for a modern audience for some reason? Just a terrible idea.

Maybe he should rack up Mel Gibson to star ;)

Does it matter to anyone that it was a wildly successful, Pulitzer Prize winning play before Stewart's movie, and has been filmed 2 or 3 times since then? It's not like Spielberg's remaking the movie, he's adapting the play as filmmakers have done before him.

I would like to see him do something else, like 'Lincoln', but I think the play could be updated just fine. I doubt a lot of the audience today is aware of the Stewart movie, so this will all be fresh to them. I'm just not interested in seeing Tom Hanks Elwood Dowd.

Perhaps Numanoid was referring to Always.

I can't see Spielberg making a movie celebrating a boozehound. Maybe he'll try to update it for modern times and have the main character be a pothead?

I thought this was going to be a movie about a Wonder Hamster.

Spielberg's track record with comedies is pretty poor. I love the guy, but 1941, Always, and The Terminal are his most problematic films...all comedies.
