What are the most manly movies?

Fighting the Youth came up with a way of finding the most chicky of chick flicks. Imdb breaks down movie ratings by sex, and the wider the gap between the women's votes and the men's votes, the chickier is the flick. The average vote for Sex and the City was 7.1 from women, 4.8 from men, producting a difference of 2.3. That's very chicky. I thought it was a good system.

So, what are the most manly movies? I looked up a few movies on imdb, and discovered that it's not enough to be violent (Commando has a difference of 0.1), full of sex jokes (Porkys 0.5), or celebrations of war (Fighting Seabees 0.0). A sense of humor helps a lot: Fight Club has 0.2.

The most manly movies I found included examinations of manly virtues by macho directors: Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch (1.4), John Ford's Red River (1.8), and John Woo's The Killer (2.1).

Can anyone top that?

Mrs Danger says that this is a chick flick. Imdb shows a vote differential of 0.1, so women like it as much as men.

I'm looking for movies that men love and women hate. I'm talking "worse than Three Stooges" here.

Re: What are the most manly movies?

Robert Aldrich's THE DIRTY DOZEN (1967), the quintessential rough-guys-on-a-suicide mission WWII film.

Look at the cast:
Lee Marvin
Charles Bronson
Jim Brown
Ernest Borgnine
George Kennedy
Robert Ryan
Telly Savalas
Clint Walker
Richard Jaeckel
John Cassavetes

Not to mention Ralph Meeker, Robert Webber, Donald Sutherland

Half of these guys were actual veterans of World War II (Marvin, Bronson, Borgnine, Kennedy, Ryan, Savalas, Jaeckel, Meeker). Marvin was wounded fighting as a marine in the Pacific.

Look at the movies these guys made: Lee Marvin and Robert Ryan were in THE PROFESSIONALS; Charles Bronson, Robert Ryan and Telly Savalas were in THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE; Ernest Borgnine and Bronson were in VERA CRUZ (also directed by Aldrich); Marvin fought Borgnine in Aldrich's EMPEROR OF THE NORTH; Ralph Meeker played Mike Hammer in Aldrich's KISS ME DEADLY; Bronson was one of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN; Borgnine was one of THE WILD BUNCH; Richard Jaeckel was in GUADALCANAL DIARY (made during the war) and THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA.

Re: What are the most manly movies?

Actually, women have rated The Dirty Dozen slightly higher than men on IMDb.

The "manliest" one I've found so far is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, with a gap of 1.5

I'll play along...

Males (average vote): 8.4
Females (average vote): 5.1
Difference: 3.3
Film: HARAKIRI aka SEPPUKU (1962)

Males (average vote): 8.2
Females (average vote): 5.6
Difference: 2.6
Film: SAMURAI REBELLION (1967)

Notes: SEVEN SAMURAI shows of difference of 1.6, and surprisingly something like SWORD OF DOOM shows the same rating from both men and women.

Some others:

Males (average vote): 8.3
Females (average vote): 5.3
Difference: 3.0
Film: ARMY OF SHADOWS (1969)

Males (average vote): 8.3
Females (average vote): 6.0
Difference: 2.3
Film: THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966)

Males (average vote): 8.2
Females (average vote): 6.5
Difference: 1.7
Film: Z (1969)

Having some doubt now as to this voting differential thing being a good measure of the "manly" appeal of any particular film. From what I've posted so far, females don't seem to keen on films that might be some combination of old, foreign, and "dry".

I wonder if you approach it from a voting percentage angle...SEX AND THE CITY shows "only" 60% (approx.) of the votes cast by males (which seems a fairly low percentage compared to some of the other stats I've been seeing...given that IMDb participation skews heavily male). On the other hand, something like NORTH DALLAS FORTY seems to skew 95% male votes vs. only 5% female voting. So maybe that is a good measure of film "manliness"...the type of movie women won't even watch. Even "guy" movies such as ZULU (93% male voting) and THE WILD GEESE (94% male voting) fall just shy of the 95% mark of NORTH DALLAS FORTY.

Re: What are the most manly movies?

Many of the porn titles I checked also have a higher average from female voters or are very close to the male average.
