Why didn't this scene end Ryan O'Neal's career?

Granted, he didn't have much of one afterwards, but honestly, this should have halted it completely.

Oh my God you are right. At least the second one has the excuse of not having much experience.

In O'Neal's defense, "Oh man!" is about as ridiculous a line of dialog as anyone could write for that moment. He was great in Paper Moon.

Tough Guys Don't Dance. Written and directed by Norman Mailer, who deserves all the blame.

He was perfect in Barry Lyndon

There is an interview on the DVD with Norman Mailer where he talks about that scene...to sum up; everyone told him to cut it out, he didn't because he felt it needed to be over the top, he later regretted not cutting it and Ryan O'Neal never forgave him for leaving that scene in.

It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

In my mind, his career began and ended with Barry Lyndon.

To be fair, he was at least 'not terrible' in Walter Hill's 'The Driver'. Cool movie BTW.

I love the fly on that kid's forehead as he yells, "Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood!" Awesome.

However, the first clip is actually worse.

I actually like Barry Lyndon, despite Ryan O'Neal.

What does she say before he does the "oh, man oh, god" bit.

"Your pet killed them?"

OH MAN!

I think Ryan had some pretty decent roles in the 70's:

The Thief Who Came to Dinner
The Driver
What's up Doc?
Barry Lyndon
Paper Moon

If any actor has at least 5 decent roles, they're not all hack in my book.

Apparently that kid's line delivery in that particular take was so good the fly wasn't enough to to use an alternate.

O'Neal seems to be acting just fine in that clip. It's the script, direction and editing that blow. Now the Troll kid, on the other hand, isn't even acting.

I hear "How's your pet? Kill them!"

I can't stop watching this. What were they thinking?
