I think he's worried that it will extend into the 50's. We all assumed Cap would be frozen at the end of/during WWII, in the 40's.

Although keeping the original idea would be best, I could see them having a villain escape only for Cap to find him 5 years later setting up the rocket/falling into Arctic tundra plot.

"Captain America" Changes, More From "Thor"

Cap's no longer an uber-patriot?

....eh....I dunno. Cap is the living ideal of what America is/was (you know what I mean) for that time. He followed the flag. He believed in the idea of America.

I just think it's ridiculous to have a character whose uniform is essentially a nation's flag and not have him be super patriotic about that nation.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America (2011, Johnston) - News, cast, rumors

Since I grew up with the Captain America as portrayed in the comics of the 70's, I like the approach they are going for in the film. I'm also not a fan of jingoistic flag wavers, so that's another reason.

I dun need to see him running down the streets singing "America! Fuck Yeah!" but he should be damned proud to be an American given he embodies its flag in what he wears.

I'm confused...where in that link do they say he isn't proud to be American? Or do people here think that in order to love your country, you have to be a jingoistic flag waver?

Rocshemp: Exactly...why did he go with it? Cuz it was his chance to help America. The only way HE felt he could be of greater service out of that...we got Cap.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America (2011, Johnston) - News, cast, rumors

This character represents a brand that is very problematical outside of it's own local market.

This was always going to be a problem for the filmmakers given the cost of these films, the international market, and presence of the character in the big team-up film all the solos are building to.

They can play to the characters base and alienate the rest of the world market, or they can try to be all things to all people (which usually ends up impressing no one).

This character was always going to be difficult to handle. It's going to be real interesting to see if any of these things actually work. Marvel probably made a very wise decision selling out to Disney when they did.

Spoiler:
Wow that was last line is cringeworthy.

I'm glad they're toning down the uber patriotic elements especially if it avoids stupid stuff like that. That would be groan inducing on the big screen.

Oh I just put that there for a laugh. As I said, I don't need to see him running around yelling the Team America theme song. But he should be an uber patriot. Not a fanatic but prouder of his nation than your average American.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America (2011, Johnston) - News, cast, rumors

Apparently Kevin Feige was interviewed about various comic properties and stated that Universal has no properties, which back in late 09 was still working on Namor. Perhaps this means that the Invaders in the second half of Captain America will have him? It would be great to see Marvel actually do something with him, to help build up to the second group of Avengers.

Re: The First Avenger: Captain America (2011, Johnston) - News, cast, rumors

This movie is honestly going to be a rather hard sell overseas I think. I can't imagine it playing as well down here as "Iron Man" say based on the title alone, sorry to say - but then Americans turn up their noses at most movies with subtitles so it's not unique to one country.

Not impressed. From what I've read though, this is just from a costume test. The actual scenes with Evans as Cap haven't been filmed yet.
