Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

Taken from here

Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the classic Atari video game "Asteroids," says The Hollywood Reporter. Matthew Lopez will write the script for the feature adaptation, which will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

In "Asteroids," initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. You can play an unofficial version of the game below!

Universal is also developing movies based on Hasbro board game properties such as "Battleship," "Candyland," "Ouija," "Monopoly" and "Clue."
There were four studios in a bidding war for this??

From the studio that brought you "Frogger", "Q*Bert", and "Pong: A Love Story" ...

If they do it completely in 2-D vector graphics, I'm there. Ooh, they also have to make it so that when the ship disappears off the left-hand side of the movie screen, it instantly reappears on the right-hand side.

Special appearance by vector graphic Bruce Willis as the UFO pilot.

Here's the plot of the only other movie the screenwriter has done:

Following the conviction of a DWI, a local jazz drummer is forced to do community service at a school for the blind where he meets a boy learning how to play the drums.
I can see why he was first choice for this.

Are these really true? I heard about Battleship but really? Candyland and Ouija? And what about the Where's Waldo movie? Universal doing that as well?

This really makes the Full House movie look like a really legit idea.

You know who really deserves a raise? Whoever is responsible hyping these rights to the point that 4 studios get into a bidding war over a 1970's era video game. Whoever that person is is a genius.

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

Why would there be a bidding war over this? It's a game about shooting asteroids.....
It's not like the brand name "Asteroids" is going to draw people in on it's own. If you want to make a movie about asteroids, then just do it. It's not like the game had some great story that you can bring to the big screen. This is truly baffling, are you sure this isn't from the onion?

Ouija has already been done. Remember "Witchboard"?

I heard Alexander Payne bought the rights to Dizzy Dizzy Dinosaur. It'll be Leaving Las Vegas meets Jurassic Park.

Here is the first clip from the movie. At least they updated the CG.

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

Haha what a joke...at least with something like the Super Mario Bros. movie you had known characters to work with, and look how that still turned out. These people must be truly tapped for material.

I'd write a "Hungry Hungry Hippos" script for them if they paid me...

Will you make sure that it features rampaging, blood-thirsty hippos, and tons of random sex and nudity? Cos that's the only way to do it right.

Posted this in the View-Master thread, but it's more appropriate here:

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

You know, Pitfall might make a decent movie. Although, it would probably just be an Indiana Jones knockoff.

It seems to have disappeared from the internet, but years ago there was an article with parodies such as Ken Burns' Frogger, Ms. Pac-Man's Diary (like Bridget Jones), and Pong: The Movie. It was at Moviefone, but the page is gone.

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

I wonder if it will have the constant "dun-dun, dun-dun" sound in the background like in the Atari 2600 version.

I want to see a Breakout movie, where it's just 2 hours of this guy in this spacesuit using a ball trying to break free of rows of colored rectangles.
The cartridge even gave us a scene:

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

Why are they talking about making Clue into a movie? They already made a Clue movie and it was rather entertaining. Of course, the game itself is a whodunnit, not just a triangular shape shooting at rocks in space, so obviously it had more to work with in developing a story...

Re: Asteroids movie announced (1979 videogame)

Am I the only one who actually would like to see a Frogger movie? (As long as they keep the Frogger song (Froggy's Lament by Buckner & Garcia).
