Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

hot off his "Star Trek" success...

i for one liked M:I 3 a lot and M:I 1 for that matter (the Woo part II was a little too much for a series like this) and i like Tom Cruise, yeah i said it. so i am optimistic about another delve into the franchise.

i could also see this going the route of latest actioners in "Taken", "Casino Royale" and the "Bourne" series which i am not saying is a bad thing, but i hope they stick to originality and keep what makes MI unique (the gadgets, the slickness, the deception).

J.J. Abrams confirms M:I 4

In this week's edition of TV Guide there's an honest-to-God exclusive about a sequel to a big action franchise, the actual first solid mention that plans are afoot for a fourth Mission: Impossible film. "I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as producer on Mission: Impossible 4," said Mission: Impossible 3 director J.J. Abrams.

"Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing," Abrams added before closing off the spigot of news.

This is the first mention of active development for M:I 4. After coming off of the wildly successful relaunch of Paramount's Star Trek franchise, Abrams is one of the hottest guys people want to work with now. M:I 3 earned $134 million domestic in 2006 plus another $263m international, making it the least successful film in the franchise financially speaking for the studio. The picture did come out at a time when Cruise's star had been tarnished by a string of social faux pas on daytime talk shows and since then the superstar has had a mildly successful reboot of his own public image. Perhaps now is a better time for an Abrams/Cruise Mission: Impossible film to find bigger success with audiences.

 I liked MI3 a lot, & I know it's not popular to say, especially around here, but I still like Tom Cruise a lot so I'm all for this, hope it actually happens.

I like Tom Cruise as both an actor and a producer. I didn't know it had become unpopular to admit to that. I would have thought the "I'm in love with Katie Holmes" shennanigans were all but forgotten by now.

I too hope this happens and I hope J.J. Abrams directs as well since M:i-III is my favorite in the series.

Before this turns into a 50 page thread knocking Scientology I'll chime in and say I'll see this flick. The last one was enjoyable.

I don't have a problem with Cruise either, so i'm looking forward to another MI.

Fine by me. Cruise may be nuts in real life, but the guy is a fine actor and that's all I need from him. MI:III was a good flick, so I'd look forward to a part 4, especially with Abrams involved.

I loved 3 and will be down for 4. Maybe he can get Daniel Day Lewis as the bad guy this time;)

I'll only see this if Simon Pegg returns. ;)

Edit: I should mention I also really liked I and III and Tom Cruise in general.

Pegg was a great little addition to 3 and with the JJ and ST connection...

Love 3...the best of the series. And Cruise is still a great action star, so I'm all for another outing.

Not a big fan of Cruise as a person but he's not too bad as an actor. I like many others liked the first and third movies in the series best and will probably see the fourth at some point.

Would be nice to see a few (if not all) of the supporting characters return, besides Cruise and Rhames this series has had no continuity. I didn't care for the relationship part of III.. just keep it all business this time.

I hope this happens with Cruise and JJ back in some capacity... I fucking LOVED M:i-III so I'm definitely in for this one.

Definitely looking forward to this. As everyone has said MI:3 was a blast.

Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

Didn't see a thread for this.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1

"Mission: Impossible IV," which once seemed truly impossible, is taking shape at Paramount.
Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have agreed to co-produce the sequel, which is aimed at a 2011 release.

The return of Cruise to Par itself is surprising in view of the circumstances surrounding his departure in August 2006. Apparently irked by the heft of Cruise’s deal, among other issues, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone abruptly terminated the 14-year relationship between the star and the studio. Cruise’s then-CAA agent, Rick Nicita, termed Redstone’s decision “shockingly offensive and graceless.”

The rift led to Cruise becoming the chief of United Artists and taking a more active role in production decisions. Redstone, meanwhile, has sought to heal the relationship. At a recent appearance, he described the star as “a great actor and a good friend.”

The “Mission” installment would augment Paramount’s formidable array of sequels, which will include “Star Trek 2” and a third “Transformers.”

Work on “Mission: Impossible IV” would inevitably be delayed by the busy schedules of the participants.

Abrams will be responsible for guiding the “Star Trek” sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled pic (formerly called “Wichita”) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

Cruise and Denzel Washington are also awaiting a rewrite on the David Cronenberg-directed “The Matarese Circle,” the MGM thriller based on the Robert Ludlum novel.

Pleasantly surprised that Paramount greenlighted this and that Cruise agreed to come back to Paramount again.

Do you think they should hire Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to write the script again? They seem to be JJ's go to guys.

Cruise is going to be 48-49 by the time this gets made. I think they need to bring in a younger co-star to work with him on this. Also, since Ethan Hunt got married at the end of III, I wonder if they would bring back Michelle Monaghan.

Re: Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

Very surprised when I posted this thread 2 months ago and not a single comment.

Anyways, writers for this movie were announced. Looks like they hired the writers from October Road and the Life on Mars remake. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. Looks like they worked with JJ previously.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=10&cs=1

Paramount Pictures and producers Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have officially lit the fuse on "Mission: Impossible IV," setting Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec to write the screenplay.
While those scribes aren’t big feature names yet, they join a roster of writers who transitioned from Abrams TV series creations to pen the features he directs and produces through his Bad Robot banner.

Applebaum and Nemec spent four seasons with Abrams as co-exec producers of "Alias," and they will script "M:I 4" based on a story Abrams wrote with them.

While the only other commitments so far are for Cruise and Abrams to produce the film together, sources said that Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, will certainly be involved in an onscreen capacity. Pic is aimed for a 2011 release.

Applebaum and Nemec are the creators of the new ABC series "Happy Town" and previously created "October Road" and the U.S. version of "Life on Mars" for ABC.

"I’ve been looking forward to working with Josh and Andre again for years," Abrams said. "Their sense of balance between character and action is wonderful, which I know is hugely important to Tom as well. We’re off to an exciting start, so, as usual, fingers crossed."

Among other topnotchfeature scribes who emerged from Bad Robot TV series are Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who were writers and co-exec producers on "Alias" before teaming with Abrams to script his feature directorial debut, "Mission: Impossible III." The duo wrote "Star Trek" and continue to collaborate with Abrams on "Fringe." Drew Goddard, who penned the Abrams-produced "Cloverfield," also came from "Alias" as a writer/co-producer, and he is a writer and co-exec producer on "Lost." "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves was writer and exec producer on "Felicity," which Abrams exec produced.

Hopefully, it would at least be on par with Mission Impossible 3 because I actually liked it.

MI3 > MI > MI2

I agree with blued888's ranking. The only part I liked about M:i-2 was the ending, which was classic Woo (for better or worse).
