Re: Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

I loved 3, and am glad to see a fourth in the works... however the screenwriter's they've got are horrible. I don't know why JJ Abrams likes these guys, they just write cutesy eye rolling shit. I wonder if someone from team Abrams will end up directing this (Drew Goddard, Matt Reeves etc.). Either way, looking forward to it anyhow.

Re: Mission Impossible 4 --> J.J. Abrams confirms new one.

I'll still watch because I'm a sucker for the spy genre and I like the supporting cast that they surrounded Hunt with in the movies.

3 was strongly OK but nothing more. It was enjoyable but nothing too special. I'm glad Abrams is there though, he does usually give me confidence in the film.

Re: Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

'Incredibles' helmer on 'Mission: Impossible IV' list (exclusive)

As the search for a "Mission: Impossible IV" director intensifies, a surprising contender has emerged: Brad Bird.

Finding a director has been a top priority for star Tom Cruise, who reprises his role as secret agent Ethan Hunt and is producing with J.J. Abrams. Paramount set a May 27, 2011, release date for the movie and is eyeing a summer start. A tentpole of this magnitude needs a lot of prep time to iron out things such as massive set pieces and worldwide locations.

Cruise and Abrams have been meeting with helmers new and old, including "Zombieland" director Ruben Fleischer and Edgar Wright, who has "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" coming out this summer.

On the surface, Bird may seem a peculiar choice. The writer-director wrote and directed 1999's "The Iron Giant" and 2004's "The Incredibles" as well as 2007's "Ratatouille" (the latter two earned Oscars for best animated picture), but he has never helmed a live-action feature.

On the other hand, nabbing Bird would be inspired. He is praised for his storytelling skills and is known for his strengths in staging thrilling and intricate action set-pieces as well as fusing the action with large dollops of heart and emotion.

Bird has been itching to make his live-action debut for a while and has long been developing "1906," set around the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. That project is set up at Warners and is rumored to be stalled because of budgetary reasons.

Bird would not be the first Pixar-ite to jump into live action. Andrew Stanton, who directed "Finding Nemo" and "WALL-E" is in London shooting "John Carter of Mars," a big-screen translation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs hero.

If Bird does end up directing "MI4," however, he would beat Stanton to the big-screen, as "Carter" has a 2012 release date.

The fourth installment of the moneymaking "Mission" franchise, based on the 1960s TV series, has been in the works for a while but gained traction in February when Cruise officially made it his next starring gig.

Plot details are being kept under a lid of secrecy, but Abrams worked on the story with scribes Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum, who have written the screenplay.

Hey, I've loved all the directorial selections. It was quick and thin, but #2 is still my favorite. When the action hit, it was unique and visceral. Reminded me of the first time I saw Bay's "Bad Boys".

Brad Bird's filmography, while animated, is very impressive. If he can make live-action as good as animated, then this could be a good one.

While I like Bird, I'd rather see them scale the film down and go after Kathryn Bigelow to make the 4th film.

^Why would hiring Bigelow = scaled down... hell, she's made more than a few big budget actioners in her time, I don't think they'd scale down anything.

True. Bigelow's resume actually has quite a few larger budget movies on it. I think that if she were given the helm they would bulk up the scale while putting out spots boasting: "from Academy Award Winning Director"

I'm not as sold on Bird as everyone else yet. Real question, has there been other director's that went between animation and live action?

Yes. The two most recent (and not that successful IMO) that come to mind are Andrew Adamson (directed Shrek, went on to do the Narnia movies) and Rob Minkoff (directed The Lion King, went on to do Stuart Little, Haunted Mansion, Forbidden Kingdom).

Re: Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

What I meant is that I'd like to see them go and do a smaller, simple, spy film that wasn't so over the top. Don't copy Casino Royal, but I think that is where they should head with the 4th film. And I to think that Bigelow should be on the list to make the film.

why would bigelow want to direct the 4th entry in a franchise after winning best director and best picture? doesn't make sense.

i would actually be fine with that, if they had a good script. They've always had big names attached to these films, imagine if we had actually gotten Fincher's MI3. That would be awesome.

Re: Mission Impossible 4 -- Coming 2011 -- Cruise to star and produce with JJ Abrams

I remember when they announced John Woo as the M:I-2 director. To action fans, that was about what would be the equivalent of announcing James Cameron as the director of this one. You need to remember that at the time Woo's last major movie was Face/Off and he seemed in a position to become a huge action director of American movies as well. Sadly, M:I-2 was the beginning of the end for his quality American movies.

EDIT: let me clarify that I liked M:I-2. I took it as the best kind of action flick Woo could make given the PG-13 rating constraint. I didn't know he would only direct crap from that point.

Hey JJ! How about going out on a limb and asking an old MI vet to helm it?! That's right - let's see Leonard Nimoy in the director's chair!

She might be interested in a project like this for all kinds of reasons. Plenty of major award winners follow their prestigious and acclaimed movies with something that's guaranteed not to even get a nomination. Despite what awards-enthusiasts are told or believe, for most in the business, they take a job because...it's a job. They like the script, they think it'll be fun/challenging, the check clears and voila! They're making another movie.

For some reason, people think about award winners and immediately become apologists for their pre-award flops, and are disappointed when they have the temerity to do something unlike their award-winner as their follow-up.

Go onto IMDb sometime and take a look at the filmography of those venerated directors, writers and actors. You know what Alec Guinness shot after The Bridge on the River Kwai (for which he rightly earned a Best Actor award)? A comedy called Barnacle Bill, in which he plays an ex-navy captain who suffers from seasickness and has troubles with the locals when he opens an amusement arcade on a pier.

I'm surprised that no one posted this, but Bird is in final negotiations to direct the 4th film. The only thing still to work out is his paycheck.

I did not think it was that bad, but one has to think. How many times does one of those people go bad. After all in 3 movies, they thought he was bad twice.

Then again I did like the end. What does "IMF" stand for (In 22 years on the net, I never once looked that up, don't know why?).
