Hangover Still #1, Eddie Murphy Bombs Again: Weekend Box Office for 6/12 - 6/14
Quick and early estimate from Deadline Hollywood Daily:
- Hangover's estimate is $10 million for Friday, looking at $32 million total for it's second weekend (30% drop from it's first weekend).
- The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3's estimate is $9 million for Friday, looking at $24 million total for it's opening weekend.
- Imagine That is dead on arrival. Murphy's fifth big-budget bomb this decade (following Meet Dave, I Spy, The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Showtime) and is just another notch in his belt on the shit the man will appear in for a paycheck.

Maybe after this, Meet Dave, and Pluto Nash, Murphy will realize that sanitized comedy isn't always the sure bet.
I'm sure there are many, like me, that want to see the R-rated Murphy of yesteryear. I mean, how awesome was it to see him in a real like movie like Dreamgirls?

I'm glad Imagine That is tanking - looked fucking terrible and hopefully will teach Eddie a lesson - but big budget? That movie couldn't have cost more than $25/$30 million which isn't on par with the $100mil bomb that was Pluto Nash or $70mil bomb I Spy....
I still laugh thinking about when I worked at a movie theatre, Dennis Quaid was in town shooting a movie - he came to see The Adventures of Pluto Nash on opening weekend (Randy Quaid is in it) and Dennis & co. were LITERALLY the only people in the theatre. Too funny.

Eddie Murphy had a new movie out this week? Was I the only one not aware of this? I haven't seen a single ad for it on TV.

I actually think The Hangover will end up with more than $32m.
I usually side with harmless kids/family entertainment as being "fine, I'm just not the target audience", but I agree, Imagine That just looked absolutely terrible.

From what I'm reading Imagine That looks like a decent family movie. Nothing great, but a decent, entertaining family movie.

With the positive reviews it's getting (there are more negative ones than positive, but not by a huge margin) it certainly doesn't seem to be a crapfest like Pluto Nash. I don't think it deserves all the hate it's getting from people who haven't even seen it.

I think DREAMGIRLS is the only one I've seen since then.

As somebody that actually thought Meet Dave was pretty good, Imagine That looks like a huge miscalculation. I'm still not sure who thought that Eddie Murphy would pull in the kids demo.

Not to mention the Haunted Mansion and both Doctor Doolittle films. Throw in his PG-13 movies, such as Norbit and the Nutty Professor movies, along with his voice work, and I think he generally does okay with the younger demographic.
Of course, he does have such a fine record in edgier rated R fare over the last fifteen years, so I can understand the complaint.

Good point on Daddy Day Care, forgot about that one. But I think Haunted Mansion pulled in as much from the pop-culture aspect as Murphy's involvement (and I thought that one was pretty good as well).
Still, with a lot of the recent bad choices he's had out there, there didn't seem like enough of a kid's "hook" with Imagine That to crossover just on his name anymore.

Eddie Murphy hasn't headlined a hit movie in so long that if he were white I'd swear he was Kevin Costner. Shrek is the only thing people will pay to see (or hear) Murphy in. Maybe Costner should try doing animation.

That has to be the only time I've ever heard Eddie Murphy compared to Kevin Costner.

Also, don't forget the blockbuster-drought he went through for eight years between 1988 and 1996:
Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)
Beverly Hills Cop III (1994)
The Distinguished Gentleman (1992)
Boomerang (1992)
Another 48 Hrs. (1990)
Harlem Nights (1989)
The only one in there I even remotely like is BOOMERANG... actually, I like BOOMERANG quite a bit. Anyway, Eddie's had his learn years before, but even a turd like NORBIT proves that people WANT to like his films.

Is Beverly Hills Cop 4 still a go? I mean I'm sure that'll be a tuned-down PG-13 crapfest but why doesn't Eddie still do R-rated features?
