The American (Corbijn, 2010): George Clooney as assassin

From Variety:
Focus Features has set Clooney to star in "A Very Private Gentleman," an adaptation of the Martin Booth novel to be directed by Anton Corbijn.

Rowan Joffe is scripting the pic, which shoots in Italy this fall.

Clooney will play an assassin who hides out in an idyllic Italian town before carrying out a final assignment. He resists his usual aversion to human interaction, and his friendships and romantic entanglements complicate his mission.

Clooney and Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov will join Anne Carrey as producer.

Sounds pretty much like every assassin movie made these days, one final assignment but something complicates everything. I like Clooney though and would probably check it out.

Speaking of assassin movies... I'd still like to see a sequel to Leon, starring Natalie Portman. Yeah, it'll probably never happen!

Well, in spite of Clooney, I'm looking forward to this. Anyone who knows Corbijn's work, knows he's a great visionary. And his first feature film ("Control") was great.

Not a Clooney fan at all (although I did like him a lot in Michael Clayton), don't like him for this role though. Would much rather see Clive Owen in a movie like this.

I thought Anton Corbijn at one point said that he didn't want to be a director, he just wanted to make Control and that was it...

I don't hate Clooney. He was great in the "Ocean's" movies, "Out of Sight", "Three Kings" and "O Brother". But having read this book, I just can't picture him in this.

I'm glad that is turing out not to be the case, as I thought Control was one of the best movies of 2007. Could have easily turned into an average musical biopic, but instead turned out to be a genuinely great film.

Agreed. I knew the Joy Division/Curtis story very well going in and it delivered on a musical and emotional level. Great feature debut by Corbijn.

I like Clooney. I like Corbijn. I like assassins. I am there.

Well, I for one thought that Control was completely insufferable, and I'm a Joy Division fan.

loved Control, and Corbijn's other work. Mildly like George Clooney, but he's been picking some good films lately so my opinion of him may be different this time next year.

Also, love assassin shit so i'm there.

Loved Control and Corbijn video work and I think Clooney is great and consistently gives us meaty adult fare of quality and substance.
lookin forward to this.

I'd prob have little interest if Clooney weren't starring in this. I think he's one of the most interesting "big" actors working today. I'll likely see this.

Looks good. I like how it has more of a drama vibe than a blow-em up action film feel.

Looks good and I'm glad Thekla Reuten is still working. She's a very good actress but I was afraid Highlander: The Source might have killed her career.
