Polanski, Brosnan, and McGregor? I'm there.

I read the book and it was nothing special. I wonder what Polanski saw in it?

So is the movie called The Ghost or The Ghost Writer?

I get a kind of 'Frantic' vibe. I'm sure it will be immaculately crafted if nothing else. I'll watch anything Polanski directs. A truly great filmmaker who always brings something of interest to the table.
(yeah even in Pirates. -wink-) |

From Denby's New Yorker review:
an extraordinarily precise and well-made political thriller—the best thing Polanski has done since the seventies |

I would say The Pianist was the best thing he's done since the 70's, but I'm still excited to see this.

Here's another review apparently written by a ghost writer for Dick Cheney.

Really want to see this. Glad to see a theatre not too far away is showing it. If this is his last film seems like a good film to go out on.

Quote from the website about the film:
"A gifted author hired to ghostwrite the memoirs of a controversial former British Prime Minister becomes a hunted man when he uncovers explosive secrets about the past. Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams and Kim Catrall star in The Ghost Writer, a taut, suspenseful thriller from the Oscar®-winning director of The Piano. " Polanski directed The Piano? Nice proofreading dipshits! :D |

Plus they misspelled Cattrall.

re: The Ghost Writer (Polanski, 2010): Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan
Ewan McGregor plays a British ghost writer (I think unnamed, so I'll just call him GW) hired to finish up the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang, after the other ghost writer shows up on the beach, seemingly drowned to death from unknown causes. Adam Lang is now under fire for war crimes, and there is a mounting pressure to get the book done in a hurry.
GW is whisked away from the UK to Martha's Vineyard in the US to meet with Lang, to better get a handle of Lang in preparation to ghost write the memoirs. By trade, GW is not an investigative reporter, but he soon finds himself in some political intrigue in this Polanski thriller, and while he allows himself to get in over his head at time, he keeps his wits about him, and has to sidestep all sorts of hazards and put together the pieces of the puzzle that have somehow fallen into his hands. Its tone and pacing are very Hitchcockian at times, which is a good thing. The film boast a crackling good cast featuring solid turns from Olivia Williams, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Wilkinson, Eli Wallach, Kim Cattrall, and Ewan McGregor. The cinematography is very chilly, somewhat detached and bleak at times, but all the while heightening GW's mounting paranoia and uneasiness, and that comes about through Polanski's assured direction of a solid screenplay that made the 2+ hour running time fly by for this viewer. I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+. |
re: The Ghost Writer (Polanski, 2010): Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan
Finally, a well-crafted thriller that doesn't rely on flashy editing and a thudding score to be successful! This was a wonderfully atmospheric, tightly-plotted film that had me mesmerized from mysterious opening to jolting conclusion. Brosnan was a real revelation, and Olivia Williams, whom I had only seen in Rushmore, was fantastic, particularly as hers was a complex, contradictory character. A virtuoso shot involving a crucial note being passed from hand to hand reminded me what a distinct pleasure it is to be in the confident hands of an absolute master like Polanski. A genre exercise to be sure, but one expertly handled, with several nice twists and turns.
