Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

Emily Browning (Who's That ???) She was the first choice for "Twilight" and passed on the audition. She's still young (I think early/mid twenties) so she still has time, but still hasn't had a "break out" movie. Ghost Ship, Series Of Unfortunate Events, The Uninvited, Sucker Punch, Pompeii.

Reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow, who passed on Titanic.

Big breaks for Kristen Stewart and Kate Winslet

She's really beautiful. I like her in the "Eye 2". Not exactly a blockbuster.

Clive Owen

He could have been bigger and recently most of his movies are straight to DVD and he has a series on Cinemax though he has not reached the Val Kilmer level yet when it comes to doing movies.

Maybe if he takes over James Bond he can become a mega star.

I think that ship has sailed. He'd be the oldest Bond ever (as far as age of the actor for the first movie).

If you dont own the anamorphic Aus R4 or at least the UK version (less cut than U.S. Version) it isnt worth watching. The only version released here is FS and cut.

^ The Relic with Tom Sizemore was her last big budget role. Fun movie.

Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

Has anyone mentioned Colin Farrell yet?

He was touted as an upcoming star for the longest time, but he never quite took with the casting directors and general public. He's a solid working actor and has a good resume, just not a movie star. Which is fine. He'll be a working actor happily for a very long time.

Not that he ever makes movies I want to see. I think I've only seen him in MINORITY REPORT and DAREDEVIL. But there'll always be films like IN BRUGES to keep him going.

He's busy ruining British TV. Last year there was a decent (but not great) BBC 3 comedy called Cuckoo, in which the daughter of a typical middle-class British family falls in love with an American hippie (Andy Samberg) while out of the country on her "gap year" (the year between high school and college, in which many European kids travel the world). Samberg apparently couldn't do a second season, so instead of waiting for him the BBC hired Lautner to play his son. Yes, really. Lautner is soooooo terrible, it's made the show unwatchable.

Seems like Rory Culkin is stuck in the up-and-coming actors loop forever. He's been in many brilliant Indie movies, and got lots of praise for his performance in Mean Creek (2004). Maybe he doesn't feel comfortable acting in big budget movies though he made a few.

Huh??? Clive Owen isn't a huge star? I guess it depends how you define "huge star" or "mega star".

I define "huge star" as anyone who has done a lot of movies and 99% of movie fans know who you are. Everyone can't be a DiCaprio or De Niro.

Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

For any Clive Owen fans out there I'd highly recommend his new show The Knick on Cinemax. It's fantastic. I could definitely see him coming back in a big way and collecting a decent amount of big awards come award season. Though it is on Cinemax and that ain't exactly HBO when it comes to people falling over themselves with praise.

Overseas, Edison Chen.

And there's a reason that he should be coming to mind these days.

I'm very familiar with Edison Chen. He was an up and coming actor in HK back in the early 2000's like Daniel Wu. Vaguely remember his photo scandal that sort of ruined his career. But these Canadian and American born Chinese model actors are a dime a dozen.

Aside from the remake of Total Recall, I can't think of a "big movie" he has starred in lately. Miami Vice came out 8 years ago. I just don't think he's interested in being a "movie star." Just look at most of the movies he's been in for the last decade. He's not always the star, and most of them are small budget/indie fair. Alexander did well worldwide, but cost too much to make a profit (same with Miami Vice). Not his fault, really. I think it was more Entertainment Weekly and the like touting him as the next big think, and him not really caring.

Nick Wechsler. Turning 35 just ruined him.

He's a star, but not a huge star. He was on that track in '05-'06 but it never really panned out.

It's only a matter of time before everyone else realizes he's the best actor on Revenge. Then his career will skyrocket.
