I don't know if he has been mentioned somewhere, but Jeff Goldblum. Sure, he's not leading-man material, but he's idiosyncratic and hilarious.

She also was great in Close Encounters and years before was cute and funny in Young Frankenstein. Also had a starring role in the popular Michael Keaton comedy Mr Mom. You'd think she would go on to a huge comedic career like a Kristin Wiig of the 80s but it never really happened for her. Only a few roles in the Nineties (most notably a small recurring part on Friends). Thought she would have been more successful. Maybe it was harder for female comedians to become big stars back then. Maybe Shelly Long just came along and took all her parts.
Or maybe it was the fact she developed Multiple Sclerosis...

Yeah, he made a splash as part of The Big Chill ensemble in 1983, and then was never heard from again.

And now he's back in Penny Dreadful, which is a pretty successful show. I've yet to see an episode, though. Lucky Number Slevin is an awesome flick.

Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

This is what happened to Emile Hirsch.

Maybe his career was at a crossroads if he could do something like this.

Actor Emile Hirsch has been charged with felony assault for allegedly choking a female executive at the Sundance Film Festival in February.

The woman, Dani Bernfeld, works for Paramount Pictures as vice president of digital entertainment. The incident took place Jan. 25 at Tao nightclub in Park City, Utah.

According to court documents, Bernfeld was approached by Hirsch at about 3:15 a.m. Hirsch appeared intoxicated, and asked why she looked “so tough” and said she was a “rich kid” who should not be at Sundance. He then grabbed Bernfeld, but she pushed him away and he left the area with some friends.

Shortly after, Hirsch came up to Bernfeld from behind and wrapped his arm around her to put her in a chokehold, say the documents. Hirsch then pulled her across a table and onto the floor, where he landed on top of her. While on top of her, he wrapped his hands around her neck.

A spokesman tells Variety that Hirsch was arrested that morning. His court date is currently set for March 16.

Hirsh is being charged with aggravated assault, a third degree felony. If convicted, he faces up to five years in the Utah State Prison.

Modine was originally offered the role of Maverick in Top Gun, but turned it down because he did not agree with the film's "politics." I think Cruise was the right choice anyway, but still an interesting tidbit.

Wow, I did not know that Matthew Modine was such a homophobe.

Man, sad to see him piss away a promising career. Into the Wild was an incredible performance. I also liked him in that Dead Poets Society knockoff lol

Didn't hear about that story involving Emile Hirsch til now either. What a dumb ass. He seems like a talented actor and Into The Wild is great but if his career wasn't doing much prior to that incident it's probably about over now.

Take a look at her IMDB page and it is riddled with parts that could have pushed her to leading lady status.
It is sort of mind-boggling that someone so beautiful and with a knack for comedy never got that breakthrough rom-com part that has been handed to so many other actresses.

43 years old in this picture!!

Damn, she looks good there, better than she ever did, if you ask me.

She's always reminded me of Rebecca de Mornay. Bright early start, fanboy favorite and then...fade.

The famous cheese heiress?

I actually never heard of her until seeing this post but then I read a piece today on the new movie, GET HARD, with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, and she's in it.

She's still amazingly hot in everything she's in. It's hard for anyone to become a huge star today, but she is adorable, hot, can act, and gets steady work.

Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

Heather Graham gets some work in direct to DVD releases and the Hangover movies might have been her highest profile movies lately.

Here eyes looked different and maybe she had some work done?

I saw Say It Isn't So (2001) on HBO with her and Chris Klein and that was bad.

Not demanding a Julia Roberts-level of fame, but a name-recognized-by-Ask Ketchum level of fame.

Re: Who were the up-and-coming actors that never became huge stars?

Ryan Phillipe unless his acting skills were not up to par though I never though he was awful like Tatum or a CW actor.

Catch Hell the movie he directed probably mirrors his career.

Not sure how long Secrets and Lies will last.
