Which is your favorite of these film franchises? (Part 2)

I like all the originals except JP3 over the 1st - all action.

I've never seen Indiana Jones - so no vote there.

Empire
Indy 3
(accidentally didnt vote in the JP matchup but it certainly wouldnt be for that disgusting piece of cheap shit that is Jurassic Park III. I left the theater so disappointed after JPIII it was more depressing than the ending of Requiem for A Dream. Actually it was kinda similar except after JPIII if felt like i was the one who experienced the ass-to-ass scene.)
Oh, and T2

Re: Which is your favorite of these film franchises? (Part 2)

Star Wars - I concede that The Empire Strikes Back is the best of the original trilogy, but I have always enjoyed Return of the Jedi more.

Indiana Jones - I used to like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom the least of the Indy series, until Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came along. Then, I realized that Temple is really the only entry in the series that doesn't follow the formula of Indy trying to find an ancient relic whose supernatural powers will end the movie's conflict. In Temple, he may seek the stolen stones, and they may be believed to be powerful, but the plot comes down to Indy fighting his way out.

Jurassic Park - The first film is one of my top ten favorites of all time; very quotable, very enjoyable. The rest of the series ebbs and flows, but doesn't come close to the magic of the first outing.

Terminator - never got into this franchise.

I thought Salvation was out, but I also had to lookup imdb to see if there was a Jurassic Park 4. My bad.

Re: Which is your favorite of these film franchises? (Part 2)

Empire - 29 years later, and it set the bar that every sci-fi-action-adventure-fantasy could ever try to pass. One of the greatest sequels of all time. One of the greatest movies of all time.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - I'll preface with this: I am not a huge Indiana Jones fan, never have been, so spare me the flames. Raiders was fun, but seeing the remake of The Mummy first might have hurt its impact. Temple of Doom was really bad. I remember being on an Indy high after watching the first movie and immediately popping in the tape for this one, and thinking it was just terrible; contrived, unfunny, goofy, and not in endearing way. Last Crusade was the first one I saw, and was my favorite for a while, until I realized that the movie doesn't get good until Connery shows up. KOTCS has everything that I wanted: it was a nice throwback, had surprises, good corny humor, fast pace, intense action. A lot of fun.

Jurassic Park is the best of the three. No contest.

I actually have a tough time with the Terminator movies. The first is terrifying, action-packed, revolutionary, and genuinely heartfelt. It was one of the first movies that was simultaneously awesome and scary.

The second raises the bar. It's more of an action movie than a thriller, but it examines the human drama more than the original. The relationship between the T800 and John Connor was a wonderful surprise, the f/x were, of course, fucking amazing (and still are), and like Empire made you remember that a sequel could be a good thing.

T3, despite no involvement from Cameron, Furlong, or Linda Hamilton, is just as good as the first two. It takes the story places I didn't think it could go without being contrived, has amazing old-school action with new school f/x (the fire-truck/crane chase was awesome), a nice bit of humor (though I could understand why some didn't appreciate it), and an ending so powerful it really hurt. But since I think it strikes the perfect chord, I voted for T2.

Re: Which is your favorite of these film franchises? (Part 2)

Empire - Real tough call on this one. I lvoe all the original trilogy, but Empire, I think, was absolutely perfect. You've got Hoth, Yoda and Luke's training, Han is frozen in Carbonite, Luke loses his hand, finds out about his parentage, plus the movie ends with the bad guys winning. What's not to love?

Crusade - I personally can't stand Temple of Doom for some reason. Just never liked it. It probably didnt help that Temple is the one I have seen the least. Raiders is my second favorite fo the series, but Crusade is the most fun. It is just a fun movie every time I sit down to watch it.

Jurassic Park - Not much of a fan of the JP movies, although I saw JP in theaters on opening day. The first one is by far the best of the three, or four. I may have seen it again since the theater, but I am not sure.

T2 - As a kid I saw this one before the first one, so that probably tempered my opinion a bit. Great special effects, plus a great story. A machine without emotions caring for a kid and sacrificing himself so the kid will be safe. Which kid didnt want his own version of the Terminator to protect him? Not to mention Robert Patric as the stone cold T-1000. T3 was ok, Kristanna Loken was hot as the T-X, and the crane chase was cool. We'll see about T4.

Re: Which is your favorite of these film franchises? (Part 2)

Empire of Star Wars? Wow that is tough! I love Star Wars more, because it can be viewed as a standalone film, and it is very satisfying ending to a movie that is pure magic. In saying that, Empire is a better made film, as the milenium falcon rolling through the Asteroid field is such a great scene, and once the movie hits Cloud City the movie is as close to perfection as a movie can get.

Raiders of the Lost Ark, no debate here. Temple, Crusade, and Kingdom are just retreads and all enjoyable in their own way, but lack the freshness of Raiders.

Jurassic Park, no debate here. The sequels suck, and the series should have ended with the original. The original is essentially a morality tale that human beings shouldn't fuck with mother nature, and that is what I love about the movie, as the dinosaurs are secondary in that respect.

Although I do love T2, The Terminator is still the best of that franchise. It is a gritty, action movie with a cool story, no cheese, and doesn't pull any punches. Plus A-Nold is a great bad guy.

Empire
First Indy
Jurassic Park 3, yes, I chose #3. The first two are enjoyable but never really did it for me, especially #2. #3 is a simple, mindless underrated popcorn summer flick. More enjoyable in my humble opinion.
T2 (haven't seen Salvation yet so can't compare that one)

Good question. I appreciate your asking it.
For one thing, there are far more kinds of movies than big-budget special effects franchise films. I also don’t like the LORD OF THE RINGS or HARRY POTTER movies. I haven't even enjoyed the various superhero franchises, even though I grew up reading those comics. I might have liked those movies 40 years ago, but today, I prefer anime. I did like TRANSFORMERS, though, mainly because it was funny and didn’t take itself too seriously.

I like low-to-medium-budget genre films: westerns, crime thrillers, war movies, kung fu movies, historical fantasies from ancient eras, anime, samurai films, John Woo movies up to and including FACE/OFF. Not a lot that’s being made these days. The bigger the budget, the less entertaining it tends to be. Franchise filmmakers lose control of the basic, simple pleasures that movies used to provide. The great thing about old-school kung fu movies is they’d get a bunch of guys who knew how to fight, went to an old, crumbling temple, and then staged some great fights and filmed them. Hardly cost anything.

What have I liked lately? I like Jason Statham movies, esp. BANK JOB and the CRANK films. He’s an old-school type of star, like Bronson or Coburn, but a little rougher and more direct. I like Hayao Miyazaki movies, although his latest haven’t matched his best ones (from NAUSICAA to MONONOKE, 1984-1997). Within the past few years, I've liked APPALOOSA, PUNISHER WAR ZONE, 300, PLANET TERROR, KUNG FU HUSTLE, CINDERELLA MAN, the first two BOURNE films, and, my favorite of the 21st century, KILL BILL VOL. 1, the only film of the last 15 years outside of select anime that I’ve seen multiple times, including 4X on the big screen.

I've only seen the "first" three Star Wars. They're all the same to me.

The originals for all the others.

All four of the first installments.

Choosing between The Terminator and T-2: Judgment Day was the most difficult, but the tie goes to The Terminator.
