Hunger (McQueen, 2008) — Movie about the 1981 Northern Ireland hunger strike

HD Trailer | IMDB | 20 Mar 2009 (expansion)
HUNGER is the stunningly assured debut feature from Turner Prize-winning visual artist Steve McQueen. Winner of the 2008 Cannes Camera d’Or among other top international prizes, the film is a work of astonishing precision co-written by acclaimed Irish playwright Enda Walsh and starring Michael Fassbender (300, Tarantino’s upcoming INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS) in an unflinchingly passionate turn. HUNGER was an official selection of the Toronto, Telluride and New York film festivals. In 1981, a deadly serious battle takes place in the infamous H-block of Belfast’s Maze Prison. Republican inmates, led by Bobby Sands (Fassbender), refuse to eat until the British government acknowledges the IRA as a legitimate political organization. Steve McQueen’s commanding direction captures the phsyical details of their struggle. Is it suicide or martyrdom?

I wonder how much easier it is to get a job in movies when your name is Steve McQueen?

Caught this at last fall's NY Film Festival - absolutely riveting, one of the best things I've seen in the past few years. Not an easy film because of the violence and conditions depicted, but very rewarding experience.

Hunger is easily one of my favorites of '08. definitely inventive in terms of being a skilled display for the senses. it's incredibly piercing and experimental in the audio and visual department - i'm thrilled that this is being released in more theaters nationwide.

That looks like it might be a pretty good movie.
And yes it is distracting that the director's name is Steve McQueen.

I thought the scenes of Bobby Sands deterioration were very painful to watch. As for the film, I was transfixed by it, notably for the ingenious camera work/cinematography. A very long take between Bobby Sands and Father Moran was the closest thing to seeing a scene play out in a play 'theatre' form. Highly recommended.

I just recently watched this film as I've been on sort of a Fassbender kick (Fish Tank, Centurion) and this was just painful to watch. I particularly liked the long takes and the cinematography was very well done. It helps that Criterion's Blu-ray release is pretty much perfect. Great film.

My first proper introduction to Fassbender was in Inglorious Basterds. He was solid in it...he just had a certain quality as Archie Hilcox. The moment the CC sale at B&N happened I made sure I got Hunger, never knowing anything about McQueen either (great direction for sure), to eye wtf Fassbender was all about...holy shit. Since that time....he's become a favorite actor of mine. Amazingly enough...I had seen him in some of his previous work but didn't know him...namely 300 and Band of Brothers (which has sooooo many actors that I didn't know at that time but turns out they're famous now). He's also doing a film w/ McQueen again..so...I'm excited for more Fassbender madness!
