Re: Coen Brothers to adapt 'True Grit'

I thought it was great. All the leads are great especially Bridges. I expect this to get a best picture nom and Bridges deserves a nom too. I give it an A-.

Re: Coen Brothers to adapt 'True Grit'

People heading to this might be interested to know in advance that it's surprisingly funny. The trailers paint it very No Country but it's actually pretty lighthearted.

When he had a good director, like Ford or Hawks, Wayne turned in great performances. Hathaway is borderline and most of his Wayne films feature middling performances, but in the original True Grit he got somethin more from Wayne.

Glad to hear it's consistent with the book (which has several funny passages).

Re: Coen Brothers to adapt 'True Grit'

How's the ending? Do they feature the "future" sequence where

Spoiler:
Maddie goes to a Wild West show to visit Rooster only to find that he died a week before she arrived?

Nicholson was stoned while shooting some of his scenes though, and he's hilarious. The performances of Fonda and especially Hopper are just so amateurish.

Burn After Reading aside, I loved all Coen Bros films (including Intolerable Cruelty).
I thought Burn after Reading was brilliant but just could not get into Intolerable Cruelty. It was OK and I didn't feel like I wasted my money paying to see it but it's my least favorite of their so far.

I am really looking forward to True Grit. I never read the book or seen the original movie (and probably never will...sorry, but I don't really find John Wayne to be that great of an actor) but everything I've seen and heard and read about this new version has me very interested.

I actually wasn't a big fan of this. Maddie is made out to be such a strong role model, but she doesn't seem to be doing much ass-kicking into adulthood, I guess. I guess I liked the idea of a Maddie going on her first adventure more than the idea of a Maddie just rising to the occasion, if you know what I mean.

Really? It just seemed more real for that to happen than for it to go the way you'd like it.

So you want her to be a superhero instead of a real person?

I would rather continue to see her being a strong person rather than seeming sort of closed off and sad.

Re: Coen Brothers to adapt 'True Grit'

She does continue to be a strong character. She owns a bank in an era when it's almost unheard of for women to own a business. She remains unmarried in a period when being a baby-factory was considered the highest attainment in a woman's life. The fact that she eschews your expectations is what makes her strong.

Spoiler:
Okay, I missed the fact that she owned a bank. Fair enough. I just thought she was unmarried and she never got to catch up with Rooster -- much sadder if she just went back to her family farm, and continued to do that into old age once her mission was complete.

Quick aside:

I just saw Easy Rider for the first time a couple nights back.

[An angry roar of the crowd is heard as Lemmy ducks; detritus is hurled at him by other DVDTalkers]

I liked it, and can understand it's social significance. But I'd like to edit it down to about 30 minutes. The "acid" scene was particularly excruciating.

I was floored by the ending, though the foreshadowing made it very obvious what was going to happen.

Now, back to True Grit (glad to see you guys are keepin' The Duke alive)...

Re: Coen Brothers to adapt 'True Grit'

It's currently 97% at Rottentomatoes; Armond White was not impressed.

Okay, so this movie gets snubbed by the Golden Globes but The Tourist, which is clearly not a comedy, gets nominated? The Hollywood foreign press must truly have their heads up their asses.
