Fargo is beating Seven Samurai?

Really??

Fargo is beating one of the greatest films ever made. Wow. I'm stunned.

Matchup #1 - Superman II - Easy pick
Matchup #2 - The Godfather II - VERY easy pick
Matchup #3 - Seven Samurai - Oh, c'mon!
Matchup #4 - Raiders of the Lost Ark - Not even close
Matchup #5 - LOTR: Return of the King - The toughest one of the bunch.

It's the movie you would prefer to watch on most nights

I recognize the clear superiority of Seven Samurai as a piece of art

But I chose Fargo b/c I've only seen Seven Samurai once. I've watched Fargo around eight times.

Honestly, while I firmly believe that Seven Samurai is one of the 10 greatest movies of all time, I also find it to be one of the most entertaining movies of all time. It's got great drama, great characters, great action sequences, and even some genuinely funny comedic moments as well.

For me that 3+ hours flies by like 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Re: "Favorite" Movie Tournament Round #2/Group #2 Poll

These are getting tough...

The Shining (one of my fav horror flicks)
Aliens (this was tough, but I could watch Aliens on a loop)
Fargo (for the re-watchability factor)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (easy pick)
LotR: RotK (it rocks)

I totally can relate... there have been a few other choices in these polls that I've felt the same way about.

I do really like Seven Samurai a LOT but given the choice most nights I would probably opt for something lighter and more quickly paced. Some nights though, nothing but an intense and intricately layered 3+ hour movie will do.

This discussion is making me want to watch Seven Samurai again. haha.

Re: "Favorite" Movie Tournament Round #2/Group #2 Poll

Wow...when fanboys attack...how the hell is Dr. Strangelove losing to Raiders? Hopefully, the LOTR fanboys don't wake up and try to topple Rear Window. And yeah, if Godfather Part II loses...I think I'm done with the poll lol.

My choices:

The exact opposite of those.

Re: "Favorite" Movie Tournament Round #2/Group #2 Poll

The Shining
Aliens (only really hard choice, but so rewatchable--I don't mind if I lose this one though)
Fargo
Raiders
Rear Window (easy choice, ROTK has about 3 endings too many)

Good turnout so far. We still have a little under a day to get votes in for this one. I probably won't be posting the new group until at least 5 PM ET tomorrow. Keep the votes coming. Good luck to all your favorites

I like Fargo more as a "favorite" movie but I also think it's a better movie, but they are both great.

for me it's really close... and that's why these polls have been so much fun

otherwise i don't know that i would have ever considered those two films against each other, on terms of which is 'better'

i give the slight edge to s.s. because of the overall influence it has had on other film-makers and just the zeitgeist in general

however, Fargo will stand the test of time when it comes to 'great films'

they are both such totally different animals it makes the choice especially difficult.

Once again, I'm reminded of how few "great" movies I've seen. I can't vote at all.
