Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I have several thousand VHS tapes, some that I kept when I was actively selling them on Ebay, and others that I kept because I enjoy them. Movies like One on One and Under The Rainbow are fairly common; I used to find several of them in every video store and sold them for $20-30 every time.
JackBurton: I recognize a lot of those covers, some older horror/exploitation movies are still highly sought after because of the covers. I think one of my favorite video store memories as a teen is looking at the tape covers and reading the synopses on the back- at least with a lot of horror movies, it was completely wrong. |
Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I've been waiting for years for these movies to come out on DVD but have then on VHS.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Haven't had a VCR for a couple years. I do have a family member that will not only not give up his VHS but still has the beta hooked up too.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Just watched an anime VHS tape this morning: Vol. 5 of DIRTY PAIR, a 1989 OAV series, the final volume, containing eps. 9 & 10. I'd upgrade if it came out on DVD, but only because most of the volumes I have are English dubbed and I prefer the Japanese voice actresses. I have Vol. 1 (eps. 1-2) in Japanese with subs. and it's the best of the five. And I'm perfectly happy with it being on VHS. Up next, a VHS of the Dirty Pair movie, PROJECT EDEN.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
.....you resurrected an old thread for this?

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Sounds like someone hasn't seen Elves

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I still own Gargantua on VHS, it will never make it to DVD :(

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Never owned any VHS. My parents got us tapes when we were growing up but that was it. Haven't owned a VCR since 1999.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
VHS is for poor people. ;)

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Was over at the in-laws last night and there was his collection of VHS tapes. I had an extra copy of Saving Private ryan on DVD which i offered but he already had it on VHS "Why would he need it on DVD?"
Of course this is the guy that had his 8-track player for years after the end of the format and didn't understand why they weren't made any more, they were great. |
Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Was looking at this thread without being logged into the forum, and the contextual ad coming up was Roxio's VHS to DVD program.
Anyways, we still have a VCR that's fairly new and hardly used. I have like three sets of the original Star Wars trilogy (two Faces sets and one blue holobox set) plus a set of the SE's, all in widescreen), plus some assorted oddities we found at a garage sale a few years ago. We also have a crap ton of Star Trek episodes we recorded off TV over the years. We have all of TOS and TNG on DVD now, maybe we should spin up some of those DS9 and VOY eps for old time's sake. |

I'm still waiting on Island Claws...

I don't know if I'd consider some of those better.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I chucked all my VHS except for Boulevard Nights. I never managed to find it in stores on DVD, and didn't want to buy it on online because I thought it might be a bootleg. I'm glad I kept it because 1) it feels better to watch it in an old format for some reason and 2) I still haven't seen it in stores.
Only fairly recently am I realizing that there's still alot of good stuff that won't be released on DVD or BD. I need to buy a VCR now. @paradice lost Those are some cool Laser Disc covers. I also liked the LD covers for most movies. |
Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I still own around 25 films on VHS...mainly ones I'm waiting for on DVD.
Since I'm a William Friedkin completist these ones get the most play.... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...BL._SL500_.jpg http://bigscreenboston.typepad.com/m...9/brinks_3.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg |

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I have one VHS tape of a movie called Thunder Alley with Lief Garret  and no way to watch it! I always thought I would convert it to DVD but have not had a VHS player in years.
:jawdrop:edit Just checked and it is going for almost $50.00 now glad I kept it I almost tossed it the other day. |
Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Good article. I completely understand what those poeple are saying. I've still got plenty of old VHS tapes I'll never get rid of thanks to nostalgia. I miss the comfort of sitting down to watch that old, scratchy analog picture - adjusting my tracking and fast-forwarding through all the previews.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Very neat article. Though I don't think I've actually put in a tape in years, I still have that VCR (right by my Laserdisc player) and a couple of boxes of tapes. I may have to dig through there for any hidden gems I can flip on eBay.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
I've been watching lots of stuff on VHS for the TV on DVD Challenge over on the DVD Talk forum. Much of it doesn't exist in any other format.

Re: VHS - When there is no other option?
Haven't had a VCR hooked up for years. I do have one VHS tape that I've kept, it's a copy of Dragnet autographed by Alexandra Paul
