Your Top 5 Favorite DENZEL WASHINGTON films

Denzel Washington, I think, flourished in the 1990’s with films like Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, and the Oscar-nominated The Hurricane. These high-profile films helped establish his career as an A-List actor, even if the films themselves weren’t his best.

For my money, I’d list the following films as my Top-5 favorite. Not only does his acting have to count, but the other ingredients of what makes a good movie into a great one have to apply here as well. And it doesn’t matter if A) it bombed at the box office; B) he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar – a movie in my Top 5 transcends all of that. At the same time, just because Denzel was up for an award doesn’t make it great, either. An example of this, IMHO, would be The Hurricane. Yes, he was nominated for an Oscar. Yes, it was based on a real-life person. Yes, he was very good in this film. But, for my tastes, it was overly sentimental (and not entirely factual, which I found out later).

My Top 5 Denzel films:

01: Glory (1989)
02: Philadelphia (1993)
03: Crimson Tide (1995)
04: Training Day (2001)
05: American Gangster (2007)

Malcolm X
Glory
Man on Fire
Training Day
The Hurricane

As much as I like Denzel, his filmography is less than impressive.

Agreed - a great actor/movie star, but not a lot of top shelf, memorable films.

My list -

1) Malcolm X
2) Training Day
3) He Got Game
4) Devil In a Blue Dress
5) Crimson Tide

Re: Your Top 5 Favorite DENZEL WASHINGTON films

To be honest, other than Man on Fire, I really can't think of any Denzel movies I care about. I've enjoyed him in many movies but I just don't care about many of them.

I do love, love, love him in Man on Fire though so I think that counts for something.

I disagree, he has been in a lot of good films. Has he been in a lot of blockbusters? No but good quality films, Definitely. And the memorable films, he's got those too. The ones you named in your top 5 at least 3 of them are what I would term memorable. I guess it is a matter of how you classify memorable. If it is an actor that you remember a classic line from a movie or an actor where you go 'yeah I remember him in that movie he was very good'
