Penn was good, but not great. He got completely overshadowed in that movie by Brolin and Franco. I swear. Milk WAS excellent, natch, but The Wrestler (and Rourke's performance) was legendary. Easily the biggest Academy fuck-up since Chicago winning Best Picture.

I love Sean Penn, no doubt, he's been great in everything from Taps and Bad Boys up to now, but Jesus, we get the point. Proposition 8 sucks ass. It's like that line in Burn After Reading John Malkovich says about getting demoted in the CIA is "political." Which this shit most certainly is.

I wouldn't call him undeserving, just less deserving than Rourke. I know the Academy are suckers for a biopic, and I did think Penn was great, but he had a template of a real character to build off.

I think what Rourke created was more difficult and impressive. I could see someone else pulling off a very strong Harvey Milk performance (not as good), but I cannot fathom anyone but Rourke as Randy the Ram.
