Re: The 81st Academy Awards 2008 Awards Show Discussion.
Even though Button had 1 more win, I'd say Milk's victories for Actor and Screenplay probably put it 2nd in the voting for Picture.

And so it continues...Penn and politics?

Wow, a smug political statement and then a condescending "props" to Rourke.

Penn was good, but not great. He got completely overshadowed in that movie by Brolin and Franco. I swear. Milk WAS excellent, natch, but The Wrestler (and Rourke's performance) was legendary. Easily the biggest Academy fuck-up since Chicago winning Best Picture. I love Sean Penn, no doubt, he's been great in everything from Taps and Bad Boys up to now, but Jesus, we get the point. Proposition 8 sucks ass. It's like that line in Burn After Reading John Malkovich says about getting demoted in the CIA is "political." Which this shit most certainly is. |
Re: The 81st Academy Awards 2008 Awards Show Discussion.
Cool, Spielberg presenting.

What's with all the hate?! You guys are maybe too much in love with a comeback....

Re: The 81st Academy Awards 2008 Awards Show Discussion.
Well apparently while Penn is allowed his viewpoint on gay marriage and is proud of it, everyone else is wrong and not allowed to have an opposing viewpoint....and should be admonished for it.
Sean: The ballot was voted on and lost..go spend some more money campainging for it next year! Just claim the damn prop 8 award and be done with it, 'Comrade' |

When are we going to get another Spielberg movie that's nominated for something?

I think what Rourke created was more difficult and impressive. I could see someone else pulling off a very strong Harvey Milk performance (not as good), but I cannot fathom anyone but Rourke as Randy the Ram. |

Penn should defend that award at Wrestlemania in a ladder match

I think it's a shame that it's possible Rourke's 'persona' might have swayed voters in any way, his performance was unbelievable and I think he earned it. |

Personally, I'd KILL to see a movie where Penn and Rourke in an epic Heat-like crime saga. THAT would rule. Still, it's probably Rourke's dramatic return to the mainstream that will solidify his placement there. He's not getting trapped in DTV hell any time soon. P.S.: I thought the Academy would grow a pair of balls after last year's ceremony where every winner deserved it. They just set everything back to the early 90's. Jesus. |
