Actors You Like, But Don't Like Most of the Movies They're In?

Maybe I'm the only one, but I saw trailers for two Clive Owen movies yesterday, and a new one with Nicolas Cage. They're two actors who I really like, but don't like half or most of the movies they do.

I loved Children of Men and Shoot 'Em Up. Owen's a talented guy, but I don't really enjoy most of his work.

Nicolas Cage gets a lot of hate (and rightfully so for most of the projects he chooses), but he's still one of my favorite actors. Raising Arizona, The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off, and Ghost Rider.. I think that are it, and given his long resume, that isn't much.

Are there any actors like that for you?

Weird, Nicolas Cage is one who stars in movies that I think would be good if somebody else was the lead.

Just think if he did end up in The Wrestler... :shudder:

I guess that is for a different thread, sorry.

Eh, no, I see what you mean. I just think he picks the wrong movies. That's kind of my point. You're right.

Edward Norton (notable exceptions - Fight Club, 25th Hour, American History X, Primal Fear) -- This guy used to take such bold daring roles, now he stars in paint by numbers movies.

Clive Owen (notable exceptions - Closer, Children of Men, Sin City, BMW Short Films) -- He can play a heartless badass or a sympathetic romantic but his filmography consists of mediocrity.

Mark Wahlberg (notable exceptions - The Departed, Boogie Nights, Three Kings) -- Everything he does is crap. It seems like he'll be in a decent film every few years or so.

The only reason why I'd watch Stomp The Yard or the Saw sequels:

Johnny Depp - He makes choices that are so weird that they are sometimes hard to like, but they're usually interesting.

Mickey Rourke. Just look at some of the crap he did. Rumble Fish. The Pope of Greenwich Village. Domino. Just about all his roles in the 90s. All of it mediocre-to-crap, but all of it elevated by his presence.

None of those are crap, especially the former two.

Another vote for Nicolas Cage, though I would replace Ghost Rider with Bringing Out the Dead.

Re: Actors You Like, But Don't Like Most of the Movies They're In?

Here are some actors who are both generally not in very good movies and are often unfairly maligned as being the source of the movies' badness.

Vin Diesel. I think the guy's a pretty charismatic action star, but he's had trouble getting it to work out for him. Hopefully Fast & Furious will get him in some better movies.

Keanu Reeves. He gets a lot of flak for being a stiff actor, and I'm not necessarily arguing -- he is, a lot of the time. But I think his performances, when they're good, are largely physical and not emotional. I thought the physical aspect of his performance in Constantine was pretty great.

Paul Walker. I have less to say about Walker than the others, but I find him an agreeable presence in a movie, or, I've never hated a movie entirely on the basis of his performance.

Other actors that are just not in very good movies are...

Will Ferrell. Anchorman was probably his last most successful comedy for me. From that point on he started getting too much clout in terms of the making of the films in question, and they started to become one-note and less and less funny to me. I'm hoping the upcoming "Land of the Lost", which looks like the most fun movie he's made in years, is a change of pace.

Colin Farrell. I liked him when he was "the next big thing" and I got even more goodwill for him after seeing his truly great turn in In Bruges, but The Recruit was awful (not to mention the trailer gave the ending away), I thought Phone Booth was an on-TV kind of film, and I had zero desire to see this year's Departed rip-off Pride and Glory (nor, apparently, did anyone else). His next doesn't sound all that interesting either. Too bad...

Jason Biggs. I think the guy can be very funny. And other than the three American Pie films, the only other movie I can think of that I've seen him in was made 11 years ago.

In a similarish note, I wish Steve Martin would do one last really great, really funny comedy for adults. I'm sure he's got it in him. If he just gave the rest of us one good send-off, then I could care less if he does Pink Panther sequels for the rest of his life.

Steve Martin is a good example for recent years....
Since 2000 he has done nothing but crap....
Bringing Down the House
Looney Tunes: Back in Action
Cheaper by the Dozen
Shopgirl
Cheaper by the Dozen 2
The Pink Panther
Baby Mama
Pink Panther 2 looks horrible, his last good film was Bowfinger in 1999.

I like Adam Sandler but can't stand almost all his movies.
