Negative. He was counting the Alien vs Predator movies which would make this the 5th in the franchise or the 3rd in Predator only movies with the 4th being the next one (if it is made).

Those AVP movies really downgraded the Predator franchise. And the Alien series for that matter
Hell, I haven't been impressed with the Alien franchise since Cameron
It's like Batman (pre-Nolan)... couple good movies, the rest is diminishing returns

Now I'm gonna see it with the expectation that it's actually good

sooo fucking jealous.

If that movie as a whole can be as badass as that damn cool action clip than I am sold.

After the BD fuck up and whatnot...just finished seeing the "making of" on the DVD SE, it's a damn fine making of for a 30 min. piece. This film has a SHIT TON to live up for. As does the Expendables...damn...Predator is just an amazing film. Great cast and action, plot is badass. One liners just hitting that right note. Fuck...The Expendables biggest competition is Predator, never really thought of it till now. Cast of badasses kicking ass....hope Sly can get it to PREDATOR good.

I was looking at one of the TV spots and saw some guy in the background that looked like Boyd Crowder from Justified. Cool if he's in this, he's a great character actor.

Maybe its because of the utter crap-fest that this year has been with movies, but all of a sudden I've found myself really looking forward to this one. And I'm not a very big Rodriguez fan.

Rodriguez wrote the original screenplay years ago for Arnold. This has been reworked and it doesn't feel especially Rodriguez-esque.

I'm in the minority that enjoyed the first AvP movie (in fact I'm enjoyed most of Paul W.S. Anderson's stuff, go figure). But this looks considerably better.

Anderson gets a lot of shit, but actually hasn't done bad considering its been two video game adaptations (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil), a Sci-fi horror (Event Horizon), a 70s remake (Death Race) and AvP. Compared to the output of a lot of the truly shitty directors out there, he's doing pretty well. Though he did look worse before Uwe Boll arrived on the scene.

AvP wasn't good, but it's Oscar-caliber compared to AvP:Requiem, dunno how that one wasn't straight to video.

I'm surprised that Fox realized that two of their biggest franchises should have some actual talent in front of and/or behind the camera (the cast of this and Rodriguez, and Ridley Scott returning for the Alien prequel).

I agree, I've never been an Anderson hater. I like all the RE films & actually think the first one is a very well-made genre flick, same with Event Horizon. Death Race was total crap though.

Re: Predators (Antal, 07/09/10)

I'm actually a big fan of Anderson. Soldier, Event Horizon, Resident Evil are all really cool fun movies. Aliens vs. Predator, though, that's a tough one. For one thing, up until that point, both of those franchises were considered A-level franchises by Fox, getting big name stars and interesting directors. Even when they failed, the talent in front of and behind the camera was there. With AvP, Fox decided that these should be B-movies, and Anderson did neither series any favors. The sting is even worse when you read the first AvP graphic novel from Dark Horse, which is the absolute perfect AvP story and could be an absolutely incredible film. I'll watch it every now and again, but halfway through I always remember why I didn't like it.

The first AvP movie does steal elements from the graphic novel, often poorly.

Spoiler:
The graphic novel has Predators using the Aliens as the ultimate trophy. Kill a Xenomorph and you automatically have prestige in the Predator world. They seed the Xenomorphs on different planets, then go in and hunt them. One of their ships is sabotaged by an Alien Queen and instead of delivering eggs that spawn warriors, one of the Facehuggers is a Queen Facehugger. This ship lands on a planet newly colonized by humans (under the Weyland-Yutani banner, IIRC), and the aliens proceed to run riot. The Predators show up, expecting six or so Xenomorphs, and find the place overrun, and also inhabited by humans, which they didn't expect. The head of the colony ends up teaming up with a Predator to try and stop the alien menace.

You can see where Anderson took elements from the graphic novel for his own use, but the graphic novel has a great setting, excellent characters, and some truly tremendous set pieces, and managed to evoke what was great about both franchises. I still think someone could turn it into the definitive AvP movie.

The problem is that filming that and doing it justice would have required a huge budget, or really shitty special effects. Fox chose to cheap out and go for the cash grab which ruined the whole "idea".

I was never a big fan of the whole AvP thing though. The original comic was pretty cool but it just seemed a little lazy. "Lets stick our two big monster franchises together and let them fight it out!" Not exactly a high concept. Casual interaction woulda was fine (ala the Alien skull in P2) but I just preferred the franchises stay distinct. AvP lived up to the expectations I originally had of it back in 1994 when I was still reading comic books... which is to say, it completely sucked.

Re: Predators (Antal, 07/09/10)

Interesting bit of trivia from IMDB

When asked where he drew his inspiration for how to make a Predator film, Robert Rodriguez responded he was inspired what to do from the original Predator (1987), and what not to do by Predator 2 (1990), AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004), and AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007). Furthermore he added he drew no inspiration whatsoever from the Predator comics.
Link this trivia

I kind of liked Predator 2, but it did have to grow on me. Seems like he took the correct approach.

Ragging on Predator 2 shows a bad warning sign by the director, that movie is one of the most underrated sequels even if it's not at the original's level.

Agreed. Just watched it again recently. It's no Predator, but it's still pretty damn good. Even Gary Busey hits the right note

I'm actually surprised to hear Rodriguez diss Predator 2. It's not like Desperado or Once Upon a Time in Mexico was super classy by comparison

But just so it's clear, Rodriguez isn't directing Predators, he's producing

I love the original Predator and Predator 2 to some extent. The AvP movies were pure shit however. I also don't have much faith in Predators seeing how the only good thingsRobert Rodriguez has ever done is the Machette trailer and Rose McGowan. I know he isn't the director but I still don't see this as being any good. Hopefully I am wrong.
