I Love You Phillip Morris (Ficarra/Requa, 2009): Jim Carrey & Ewan McGregor

Synopsis:
A lovesick prison inmate (Jim Carrey) goes to great lengths to reconnect with his old cellmate, Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), in this prison-breakout black comedy from first-time helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the screenwriters of Bad Santa.

Variety review:
Less of a comedy than a hilarious tragedy, "I Love You Phillip Morris" stars Jim Carrey in his most complicated comedic role since "The Cable Guy" and as a character so criminal and gay it will leave auds both laughing and stunned.

I would imagine this is not for fans of Yes Man.

I remember seeing the "trailer" last month and thinking that it looked very different, especially in tone. Could be interesting.

Based on the title, I thought this was going to be a movie about someone with a smoking fetish.

Re: I Love You Phillip Morris (Ficarra/Requa, 2009): Jim Carrey & Ewan McGregor

Ridiculous, but not unexpected news, from The Digital Spy:
Jim Carrey black comedy I Love You Phillip Morris may not get a US cinema release because it contains an explicit gay sex scene.

Despite securing distribution deals in the UK and Europe, US firms are uneasy with a love scene between Carrey and Ewan McGregor's character Phillip Morris, reports The Times.

"The depiction of the sexual activity was far more than I've ever seen in a mainstream film with a mainstream celebrity," said Lewis Tice, director of publicity and marketing for TLA Releasing. "There's a graphic sex scene in the first 10 minutes that I was surprised to see."

Filmmakers are re-cutting the movie for US distribution companies in an attempt to secure a theatrical release. If no agreement is reached, the movie will go straight to DVD.

"Mostly straight, multiplex-going audiences don't want to see a romantic comedy in which two dudes get it on; unless it is meant as a joke," commented Scott Stiffler, author of Why Hollywood Avoids Gay Movies.

I Love You Phillip Morris focuses on real-life con artist Steven Marshall (Carrey), who falls in love with his cellmate (McGregor).

Oh, c'mon. Just f'in release it the way it is.

I know what's going to happen. They're going to edit it down a bit. It'll be a little blurb on all of the entertainment shows. It'll get released and people will have a slight bias against it, blaming it on the edits. So the reviews and opinions won't be as honest as they could be. Then they'll release it "unrated" on DVD. The DVD will contain a slightly-different edit.

Just release it they way it sits and see what people think. If they dont' like it, they won't watch it. But doing a different edit is not the way to go. It's just going to immediately knock it down a notch in peoples minds.

I don't believe for a second that there was ever a graphic gay sex scene in the movie.

'Graphic sex scene' is the most overused (wrongly) phrase in Hollywood

So California's pissed off about Proposition 8, Iowa legalizes gay marriage, Sean Penn wins the Oscar for Milk, and yet this movie can't get properly released. Jeez.

Just release the damned thing. Fuck the general public and their homophobia. This is not a movie for everybody and the people who would be offended by seeing a sex scene between two men are probably the same people who weren't going to see it anyway. I love how they will compromise the film so that Joe six-pack, who wasn't going to see it anyway, can sleep a little better at night.

Trailer

Hmmm.. audio plays fine, but the video is squished in the left-hand corner. Anyone else have this problem?

I watched half of this film last night - it's really good! It's a perfect mix of Jim Carrey's potential - humor and drama. It's funnier than I expected as well. I'll watch the rest tonight and give my final verdict. This is one of Jim Carrey's second best acting performances (the first one being Eternal Sunshine).

Delayed, yet again

The film is now looking likely to be pushed back from late July to sometime in October at the earliest.

At this point, I'm hoping to see this one as a double feature with "The Day The Clown Cried".

How and where did you see it? What did they cut - visual scenes, dialogue scenes? (I saw the UK uncut version, so you can tell me in spoiler text)

Re: I Love You Phillip Morris (Ficarra/Requa, 2009): Jim Carrey & Ewan McGregor

So, does anybody know exactly what was cut out of this film? I just watched the 98 minute Hong Kong Blu-ray and the whole thing felt very disjointed. I'm not sure if that was due to censorship or if it's just how the film was made. From what I saw, nothing was offensive or shocking. It was just a few random sex scenes, two of which are played for laughs. In fact, I've seen much worse on Oz. If these gay scenes are truly what's causing all the problems, people need to grow the fuck up. In fact from a character standpoint, I never felt that they were truly in love.

As for the movie itself, it was just okay. I felt like it didn't know if it wanted to be an outright comedy or a drama. It did not blend the two genres very well. With that said, there are some great comedic scenes and a couple of really solid dramatic scenes. The problem is that they are just randomly tossed into the film and it causes the tone to shift abruptly. The ending is a perfect example of this. We get a pretty touching dramatic moment and them we fade to a stupid slapstick scene.

I saw this about a year ago and I personally hated it. I didn't think it was funny at all.

However, those who didn't see it can start on Dec 3 as that is when it hits theaters.

Couldn't disagree more. I had no interest in it at all and watched it out of sheer boredom flying back from London last June and thought it was great. And very funny.
