Not exactly the optimal format for that movie, but whatever gets it seen is good by me!

From Youtube Comments: "chunkatronic (12 minutes ago) Thank you, MGM, IRE, whoever, for ruining a brilliant film. This is not the original aspect ratio of the film, they just hacked off the top and bottom of the images to market it as 'widescreen'. Look at almost any shot, the tops of peoples' heads, buildings, everything, are missing. All the shots feel too close-up. Most obvious at 1:11:30, the woman's lighter is not even in shot. At least do like so many DVD releases and put 4:3 on one side and 16:9 on the other"
So which one of you wrote that?

However, I've never seen the 'other side' of a youtube video. I think it would be really scary.
Speaking of youtube, I was totally shocked by my 'recommended videos' yesterday - number one was a guy breaking his leg on some other dude's leg during an Ultimate Fighting match or something. (shame)
Now back to the thread ...

That dude is an idiot, it's the exact same aspect ratio as the theatrical release and the DVD release. I don't even understand his complaint, since it doesn't even involve black bars in this case.

10:1 the fullscreen MGM transfer was merely an open matte release. Open matte doesn't mean it's a right aspect ratio. Look at Kubrick's films; shot for 1.66/1.85/2.35:1 theatrical exhibititions; original DVDs (save for 2001) were all open matte full frame. You saw more image but it was obvious it was wasted extra space.
