Blaxploitation favorites?

So, a work mate and I have decided to go on a Blaxploitation film marathon. And I'm in search of some "classic" or "must see" material that might qualify. I'd like to save a few bucks if I can since I'm probably going to have to purchase quite a few just to be able to see 'em. Not like it's a huge genre to get through, but still ....

I currently own:

Superfly
Coffy
Foxy Brown
TNT Jackson/The Black Godfather
The Mack
Hell up in Harlem

Those on the short list of must buys:

Black Caesar
Shaft (original)
Cotton Comes to Harlem
Dolemite
Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss song

Thanks ...

ps - oh yeah, and the Black Dynamite release couldn't arrive quickly enough. It looks outrageous!!

You need to pick up Across 110th Street as soon as possible. This thread might give you a few ideas as well.

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

BTW, if you have a CH account, most of the MGM Soul Cinema titles are $4.71.

American International Pictures (Now property of MGM) really had the best library of blaxploitation flicks, so you can't really go wrong with this--Despite many of the selections being bare-bones.

And I've said it before, but Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss song is nothing like the rest of the pack. So watch out for that one.

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

I like...

Slaughter's Big Rip-Off
Coffy
Foxy Brown

The original Slaughter was actually a bit of a disappointment on a lot of levels. Not horribly bad, but even for a low budget Blaxploitation movie it seemed amateurish in several spots. Hell, it's got what may be Rip Torn's worst performance ever. He's usually pretty good, but not here (being horribly miscast didn't help him). The sequel is a lot better in this case.

It may be a little hard to find, but also check out Truck Turner, starring Isaac Hayes and featuring Yaphet Kotto and Nichelle Nichols. Great stuff.

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

Three that never get enough love:

MONKEY HUSTLE (one of the better quality Rudy Ray Moore pictures; largely because he didn't make it himself or play the lead)
TRICK BABY (part of the same Universal series as WILLIE DYNAMITE)
BLACK SHAMPOO (great special edition for a very low price at Amazon)

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

Thanks again for all the input guys.

Any love out there for Cleopatra Jones? It hasn't been mentioned yet here or the other thread Noirfan pointed out.

Based on the feature Max Julien interview on The Mack I'd consider biting on Cleopatra alone due to his involvement - writer/producer. The guy comes across as fairly cocky, but he's also engaging and seems to have a passion for the material.

You're welcome.

Oh, and Coffy, Black Mama White Mama and I also liked The Boss too.

When is Black Dynamite supposed to be released?

It's scheduled to be shown at Sundance in January, so I'm assume it's just waiting to be financed for an American release. Haven't been able to find any more info about it. But I'm sure we'll at least get a DVD release by the third quarter of the year at least .. hoping.

-----

Placed an order for a few ....

Sweet Sweetback's Baadaaass Song (thee "original")
Willie Dynamite (some call it better than The Mack)
Cleopatra Jones (Julien's involvement)

Considering the Xenon Dolemite collection which will fulfill some recommendations, but I'm trying to get it down to about $20.

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

I'm not sure if it really qualifies as Blaxploitation, and it certainly has artier ambitions than the other films mentioned, but Ganja and Hess is worth checking out.

Re: Blaxploitation favorites?

I really need to order some more Blaxploitation films.

Realized that I only have a couple of the Pam Grier films and that's it

I actually wish All-Day Entertainment (The company that released this) would also release the edited, "Drive-In" version of G&H that the director and producers disowned just for comparison's sake (ala Brazil)

CLEOPATRA JONES is a must, but the rollicking, queen-sized sequel CLEOPATRA JONES AND THE CASINO OF GOLD (1975) is even better (I'm so ashamed I didn't remember it in my last post! ), cocktailing two then-popular grindhouse genres--blaxploitation and kung fu--to heavenly effect. Tamara Dobson's self-designed wardrobe and makeup (the latter seemingly applied with Homer Simpson's infamous cosmetic rifle) has to be seen to be believed. Her table-sized floppy hats and ultra-flared bell-bottom slacks nicely complement her seemingly endless library of sassy repartee ("Relax child! The way I feel tonight, Muhammad Ali will have his hands full!"), and she kicks some serious Hong Kong drug dealer ass alongside the lovely Tanny Tien Ni against the minions of lesbian "Dragon Lady" Stella Stevens. A co-production between Warner and Shaw Brothers, CASINO was shot in wide-open, sun-drenched scope on one of the largest blaxploitation budgets ever by Chuck Bail, who debuted the previous year with Warner's now-rare prorammer BLACK SAMSON, and who would the following year deliver the quintessential road race movie THE GUMBALL RALLY, which is every bit the equal to CASINO in comic tone and rich production value. It's a crying shame that Bail was never able to parlay this picture and GUMBALL into more action-comedy theatricals, because he definitely had the gift. The final confrontation, in which Stevens' lavish casino is virtually destroyed by flying fists, bodies and motorcycles (!) still ranks as one of my all-time favourite martial arts action set-pieces of the era.

Warner released CASINO in the U.K. in a nice anamorphic widescreen edition, and it can still be purchased fairly cheaply through Amazon there, which is nice considering a Region 1 release doesn't seem imminent:
