Recommend me some good 70s "Cops & Robbers" movies

I just watched "Bullitt", "The Taking of Pelham 123", and "French Connection" I'm looking for more gritty crime movies in their vein. I liked the humor in "Pelham" it reminded me of "Inside Man" somewhat. Matthau was an unlikely protagonist.

Okay, old trailers are kind of goofy compared to new trailers. And there's some minor spoilers in there. But I really do vouch for it's greatness.

Get Carter (1971) - starring Michael Caine (who's amazingly vicious in it as his character ruthlessly seeks revenge)

.

....with Matthau:

Laughing Policeman (1973)

and I second The Driver (1978) - before the DVD came out awhile back, the only way I could get it was a Japanese laserdisc

Charley Varrick has been mentioned as well...that's also a favorite

You beat me to that one.

'Serpico' also already mentioned

One of my favorite movies, one that is always in my top five and fits your criteria is 'Le Cercle Rouge' by Jean Pierre Melville. This is one of the best films ever made. The awesomeness of this movie is overwhelming.

Another masterpiece collection that is always one of my favorites is 'The Yakuza Papers' collection. The DVD set is really sweet for those movies.

'The Onion Field' is a really good movie.

'Electra Glide In Blue' is a good 70s movie. Overlooked really.

'The Long Goodbye' is one of my favorite films of the 70s. (not exactly a cop movie)

Not exactly a 'cop' movie but 'Night Moves' with Gene Hackman is fantastic.

Some other good ones already mentioned.

'Prince Of The City' is from the 80's I think but you will want to see it.

Yes, Treat Williams is superb in this. If I recall correctly, it has (or had) the record for most speaking parts in a film.
