I'm trying to be open-minded about this, but I have a feeling it'll be no better than the first.

This is how I feel as well. I enjoyed the first one for what it was, but this IP definitely deserves better treatment.

Karl Urban to don helmet for 'Judge Dredd'

With all the attention focused on Sylvester Stallone’s “The Expendables,” one noteworthy bit of development occurred this past weekend on a remake of movie that was a Stallone vehicle back in the 1990s.

Karl Urban (pictured), who last played Bones McCoy in “Star Trek,” has come on board to play the title character of “Judge Dredd,” based on the British comic book character.

Urban’s deal officially closed yesterday. The comic is set in a future where police act as judge, jury and executioner. Urban will play Joe Dredd, the creme de la creme of the elite police corps.

The character is almost always seen wearing a helmet-mask and the producers have said Urban will be hatted through most of the movie.

Pete Travis, who directed “Vantage Point,” is helming the feature, which is being financed and produced by Andrew MacDonald, a frequent collaborator of Danny Boyle and his DNA Films. Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global are also financing and producing.

Several studios are lining up to ask “Dredd” to the dance but the production team wants to line up the female lead before signing any distribution deal.

WME-repped Urban next appears in “Red,” Summit’s adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic that also stars Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren.

"Most"? Shouldn't that be "all"?

I've never read the Judge Dredd comics, but I loved the movie.

Re: New JUDGE DREDD movie! The Rebooting continues.

I spoke with my mate today who is the stunt man/stand in for Karl Urban on Dredd and he told me that he had his first try on for the Judge costume and got to play around with the Lawgiver. He was very upbeat about the movie and said that the bikes and overall design was being handled pretty damn well. I am hoping that he might get a chance to send some pics from filming which apparently starts the very beginning of November.

I am really hoping that this movie gets done right. I was always a fan of the comic strip and felt that Dredd (Along with a lot of other 2000ad characters) had great big screen potential. Just bring on a sequel with Judge Death.

First photo is online, courtesy of comic artist and concept designer jock on Twitter;

While that is Karl Urban under the helmet, CHUD cautions that this is from a rehearsal, and may not be 100% indicative of the finished product, but I'm liking the look so far.

I like the look as well, and I really hope he's got the helmet on the whole movie.

/\ I read somewhere a long time ago that they have no intention of removing the helmet at all during the film.

Being that pic is from what it is. Everything's good about it except that helmet. Too big. BUT..I'm sure that that's just something they'll fix when it really gets working.

I've been reading some of the first Dredd strips from '77 and the helmet is pretty huge, so that doesn't look too off from how Dredd originally looked.

Re: New JUDGE DREDD movie! The Rebooting continues.

I like the costume design. I'm not that familiar with Judge Dredd. The only thing I've read was the first Batman crossover with Batman.

Still, I hope it has more of a gritty UK comic/future dystopia feel to it, than a pg-13 comic movie with toy tie ins.

It was. In fact, when I first saw stills of Stallone in the costume for the 90's flick, I always thought the helmet was kinda small.

My problem with it is that it looks clunky. If they cut down the width by an inch...I think it'd look better.

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Domhnall Gleeson Talks About "Spectacular" Judge Dredd Movie
Domhnall Gleeson knows about being in high quality fantasy movies. He played Bill Weasley in the blockbuster Harry Potter series. Even after being in movies as good as the Potter ones were, he is still excited about the upcoming Judge Dredd movie.

Here is what Den of Geek had to say about his role:

Gleeson confirmed that he plays an entirely new character, created by screenwriter, Alex Garland, not based on anyone from the Judge Dredd comic book stories.

“I’m playing kind of a techie guy who might be a baddie or not, he’s an interesting guy, I hope that in some way he’s got a piece of the heart of the story.”

Gleeson finished shooting Dredd in South Africa in January, and was full of praise for the team behind it, listing the “amazing cinematographer, brilliant writer, fantastic actors and great director”.

Gleeson summed things up by saying, “If it’s as good as it can be, then I think it will be spectacular.”
