I rewatched it recently. It's insanely entertaining.

Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
Okay, never saw it. Is it streaming anywhere?

Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
Can't recall the actor playing Frank but in my mind he has been the best yet. The rest of the movie was shitty from what I remember. I recall the scene where a guy somersaults between buildings and Frank kills him with a rocket launcher. Smallest explosion ever and made me laugh at how bad it looked. Tempted to watch it a second time to give it another chance.

Make sure to listen to the How Did This Get Made episode too. They have the director on and it's pretty fucking great.
Edit: I just noticed it was also mentioned in post 84. Still highly recommended! |

Oh, yep, there it is. Okay. This month, I'll watch it this month.

I have such a vivid memory of being in the theatre, seeing this scene, and laughing hysterically.

Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
Maybe meant to be funny, but as can be seen on the video that was posted it comes off as more pathetic than funny. At least make it a decent explosion. Looks more like a giant fart than a rocket exploding.

Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
This movie was and still is criminally underrated. It felt the most like a Punisher comic with probably the best live action movie Punisher(Dolph being my second choice and Tom Jane my third). Good to see it's gaining more fans over the years.

I’m writing to tell you that I regretfully and painfully had to pull out of P2. I can’t tell you how completely broken up I am about it. After busting my ass at the gym four days a week for almost two years, watching every character driven action pic that any fan would ask me to watch while I was standing in line buying egg whites and Tuna fish (Leon the Professional, Oldboy, The Seven-Ups (GREAT flick), Point Blank, Escape from NY, The Driver, Magnum Force, The Mechanic, The Great Silence, Sexy Beast, Nighthawks, Cry Vengeance (check it out), Road Warrior, Man on Fire, Outlaw Josey Wales, Rocky (think about it), Serpico, etc etc etc.) after countless Saturday nights making notes and drinking soda water and munching on seaweed sticks while my daughter slept on my lap to the sound of automatic gunfire, (now she can’t sleep without it. I had to make a tape of automatic gunfire to play in her room at night) after hauling myself to any ‘Guns! Knifes! Ammo!’ show in any small town that I found myself in shooting Killshot or The Mist or Mutant Chronicles, after torn ligaments, screwed up rotator cuffs, thousands of $$$ on ridiculously huge vitamins, overly long conversations with frighteningly tall men about The Fastest Way To Kill Someone With Your Bare Hands, and after a dude refused to sell me a Fatburger at 2am on Santa Monica Blvd, I am, sadly – no, make that heartbrokenly – fuck it - just rip out the heart and stomp it into the pavement a couple of times – pulling out. Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves. I'm sharing this with you because I know you're a fan, like me, and you've got your ear to the ground, and because we seem to share the same sort of taste and passion when it comes to movies and stories that get us off. What I won't do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don't believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch. Sincerely, Thomas Jane |
Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
wow, he mentioned OldBoy as an action driven pic he watched. not sure i would qualify it as that, but cool nonetheless. and i don't buy his reasons for not coming back for a second. if he wanted to/could've he would've...
Either way, i thought War Zone was a hell of a lot more fun than Jane's, but i still kinda like that one too... |
Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
I remember Jane hating the script for PWZ and things started to fall apart from there.

Re: Punisher: War Zone -- The Reviews/Comments thread
Personally, I'm glad that Thomas Jane wasn't in Punisher: War Zone. I think Ray Stevenson was much, much better in the role. The only other actor who I think was/is also great in the role is Jon Bernthal. But I think Thomas Jane was disappointing in the role. And he's an actor I like in a lot of stuff so I say that as a fan of his work. At first, I blamed the 2004 Punisher movie with its bizarre plot and wildly inconsistent tone, but then on repeat viewing I realized Thomas Jane just wasn't that good in it either.
This movie reviewer says a lot of stuff I agree with in this 2016 video: |
