The Great Buck Howard (McGinly, 2009): comedy with Malkovich, Colin and Tom Hanks

Synopsis:
In the comedy "The Great Buck Howard," recent law school dropout Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) answers an ad for a "Road Manager and Personal Assistant for Celebrity Performer", thinking it will break him into the entertainment industry. In actual fact, he has signed on to work for Buck Howard (John Malkovich), a has-been magician trying to revitalize his waning career. With the help of a fiery publicist (Tom Hanks), Troy and Buck embark on a cross-country tour in hopes of staging the comeback of a lifetime.

Great cast. Interesting premise with Malkovich as the has-been in what seems to be a universe populated with real world media figures (Conan, Stewart, et al).

Haven't seen anything the writer-director has done, though. Is he any good?

Colin and Tom look a little too similar to be playing two unrelated characters imo.

Think so? I always thought he looked a little more like his mom.

Can't wait for the flick, I hope it's going to play in theaters around here so I don't have to watch on HDNet first.

FYI: This is going to be a freebie on HDNet on Wed, March 18, 8PM EST. One time showing only(at least until after its theatrical run). This is part of the reason I love HDNet.

I missed this at Sundance last year, but my two colleagues who did see it absolutely loved it. One of them called it "pound for pound the most entertaining film at Sundance."

Re: The Great Buck Howard (McGinly, 2009): comedy with Malkovich, Colin and Tom Hanks

Variety review:
A smoothly turned-out entertainment centered around an Amazing Kreskin-style mentalist comes down with an unfortunate case of the warm-and-fuzzies in "The Great Buck Howard." Behind-the-curtains comedy reps an amusing showcase for John Malkovich's diva-like theatrics in the title role, but writer-director Sean McGinly's decision to frame the story as a relationship movie, as Buck's impressionable young assistant deals with some very familiar life issues, tilts the comic seesaw toward sentiment over satire.

I saw it on HDNET

I liked it but it was not laugh out loud funny except for maybe 2 parts.

I really enjoyed it.

Just don't expect much. A very small, kind dramedy. Malkovich is wonderful in it.
