American remake of 'The Host'
From Variety:
Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski will remake the 2006 Bong Joon-ho-directed Korean thriller "The Host," with commercials director Fredrik Bond making his feature helming debut and Mark Poirier ("Smart People") to pen the script. Story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her. Verbinski will produce with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Paul Brooks. |

Verbinski needs to pull the plug on this and get on with Bioshock.

I didn't care for The Host and really have no interest in seeing a remake. |
maybe it'll be less bland - and I hope less hyped than the original
|
It's bound to happen. With the success of Cloverfield, I wouldn't be surprised to see more monster films around the corner. Why not begin with an existing premise.
I'd rent it, just to witness what Hollywood does with the blending of some good ol' fashioned Korean melodrama and out of place black humor that made the original work ..and fairly distinct. ...and see it all gets flushed down the toilet. It's not as if the original is a classic or anything, but I did enjoy quite a few aspects of it ..at least enough to fork over for the super-maxed Korean limited DVD release of it. Still one of my favorite sets. |
So what?

I don't think they'll have the balls to ...
Spoiler:
To be honest, the only way an American remake would work is if they make it an all-out action film with more drama and less comedy; but then again, that also defeats the purpose of the original film. |
(Shakes head) So Hollywood has dug the well all the way to China. Well, South Korea.

If they keep that character as underdeveloped as they were in the original, I don't see the problem.

The phrase "commercials director" is a pretty big red flag.
Here's one commerical Fredrik Bond has directed: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pNWYDqP_sjE&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pNWYDqP_sjE&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNWYDqP_sjE |
