Greatest living actress? Yes.

Greatest of all time? Bette Davis.

Katharine Hepburn is like a Jack Nickelson actor.
They are good at playing themselves.
Streep can change her whole character like Marlon Brando.

I have to disagree. Daniel Day Lewis is the best living film actor, male or female, of all time.

Brando is no longer living, but he is the best actor of all time.

Are we talking about certain films? Day Lewis has yet to do anything to embarrass himself and tarnish his legacy.

It's hard to argue against Brando in his prime though.

I dunno...Day-Lewis is the man. They should teach a class on the Day-Lewis method if there is officially one. Brando in his prime though was like a god. But his fucking downfall was an everlasting one. Any and all Hepburns are overrated. Katherine was nothing special...just playing herself, and Audrey was fucking overrated crap who had good roles for the light acting she could pop out.

I for one cannot stand Katherine Hepburn - a brittle bore with zero sex appeal. Even in her earlier screwball comedy mode, I find her tremendously irritating and unfunny. Stanwyck easily wins the battle of the closeted-lesbian thespians.

I absolutely agree. Cate Blanchett was a better Katherine Hepburn than Katherine Hepburn ever was.

I'm sure she's in the top 5, along with Bergman, Davis and Jodie Foster.

Meryl Streep was rejected for a role in 1976 movie King Kong by film maker Dino De Laurentis, who told her she was too ugly.

The Oscar winner landed an audition with the veteran Italian producer, but he was unimpressed with her physical attributes, and dismissed her crudely, in Italian - not releasing Streep spoke the language fluently.

Streep says, "He said to his son, who organised the meeting, "She's ugly. Why did you bring me this thing.'

"He didn't realise I'd just graduated and studied Italian 105."

"When I replied in Italian, he looked like he had been shot."

Instead of Streep, the role went to Jessica Lange.

A lot of women would look ugly compared to a young Jessica Lange.

Sure, why not? I've never been disappointed with Meryl Streep's acting. I don't claim to have seen all of her movies nor the many other great actresses' performances but I know she always delivers.

This is silly. There is no "greatest". There are performances that vary in quality. There are great actors, but to declare one best is like declaring the best director. Tastes vary.

Someone earlier said Brando was the best actor of all time. I personally can't stand Brando performances because he sounds like he has a speech impediment at best. The only performance I felt he was great in was as The Godfather.
