Survival of the Dead -- George Romero's next Dead film

I saw it free on HDnet and that's where the good part ends. It was too inconsistent and played too broadly. There was no tension or menace and the situations were far too unbelievable. The setup for the final sequence wreaked of laziness.

re: Survival of the Dead -- George Romero's next Dead film
I made it through an hour the other night, and even that was difficult. The CGI work is beyond piss poor. I thought it was cool seeing Kenneth Welsh, but it felt like the entire damn film was about two feuding families. Who gives a shit about that? I don't want to watch a goddamn Hatfield/McCoy movie, I want a cool zombie flick.
The more George keeps cranking out crap like this, the more I start to appreciate how much better Land of the Dead is than people give it credit for. I'll agree it is far from perfect, and there are plenty of bad casting examples, but he hasn't made anything else that comes as close to matching up with his revered zombie movies.

I liked this better than most of you. The CGI was terrible, but overall the story kept me engaged as it was a little bit of a different spin on the usual zombie plotlines. Not as good as the original trilogy, of course, but it was certainly better than Land (haven't seen Diary).

This film was terrible. Pure shit. I know I praised Adam Tyner not too long ago (can't remember for which flick) but I can't believe the rating he gave this film.
When is Romero going to just stop?? I honestly felt like this flick was the kind of movie you wake up to at 3am because you accidentally fell asleep on the couch.

I don't think Survival of the Dead is good in the sense of being...y'know, good, but I also don't think that's the sort of movie George Romero was trying to make. It feels deliberately ridiculous, and if you approach Survival... as an action/comedy that tosses a bunch of Western and horror elements into the mix, you might have a good time with it too. I see nothing to suggest that Romero has another Dawn of the Dead in him, and he's even saying as much in interviews anymore. He knows he's going to be the zombie guy until he's rotting in the ground himself, he knows this is the only type of movie he'll be able to get financed easily, and he knows he's not going to be able to craft another genre classic. I get the impression that Romero has accepted all that and was just out to have fun with this one. I enjoyed it for what it is.
I'm sure going in with inhumanly low expectations didn't hurt either.

Romero actually made a romantic comedy before, "There's Always Vanilla", it's not very good.
I actually thought Survival of the Dead wasn't bad. It was a lot better than Diary of the Dead and had more of a feel of "classic" Romero to it. It wasn't nearly in the same ball park as Day/Night/Dawn, but it was a decent enough time killer.

You did that for my review of The Happening. You also said you agreed with my review of the Black Christmas remake...one of the only positive write-ups in existence of that flick.

Black Christmas....yeah, that was the other one, I still dig that dumb flick.

re: Survival of the Dead -- George Romero's next Dead film
Now, I've seen shuffling zombies, running zombies, zombies calling their Aunt Alicia on the phone, sneaky zombies, talking zombies, climbing zombies, but I had never seen a zombie on fucking horseback.

The zombie girl riding a horse was amazing. Romero always sneaks in little bits about the current political clime - DOTD was about commercialism and material consumption going out of control at the time, and LOTD was about the Iraq war and our desperation to make it work. SOTD I think was trying to make a statement about factory farming and our mistreatment of animals, but it just fell flat. All that was left was the zombie attacks which weren't up to snuff, though the very nihilistic ending (even for him) really stuck with me.
I hope he has another great horror movie of any type up his sleeve. He didn't do so bad with vampires and sci-fi (Martin and Monkey Shines), did he?
