My 10 year daughter wants to see this. Nuff said.

The Bus 11-13-08 08:57 AM

The midnight shows around here are already sold out.

Same here, unfortunately. They already added a second one.

But I'm not expecting this to touch Dark Knight-like numbers.

Mercury&Solace 11-14-08 12:16 AM

Any takers on a $70 million dollar opening?

Only if 50% of the teenage girls in the US all are taken ill for the entire weekend. Or were you only talking about opening day?

rotfl rotfl rotfl Nice call.

Opening weekend for this movie is hard to gauge, it can't do over $70 million for opening weekend, will it???

Solid Snake 11-15-08 12:18 AM

The theater near the university here is sold out for opening day. This sickens me somewhat....

:D

It is hard to gauge, but based on my anecdotal evidence, it will be huge. Every one of the people I've talked to in the past two weeks who is a parent of a teenage girl has indicated that their daughter is going, many to a midnight showing. And many of the parents are tagging along (either as chaperones or because they too want to see the film).

I'm just looking at it compared to the first Harry Potter film, which opened with $90 million (in 2001 dollars), in about 3600 theaters. Twilight is opening in at least 3200 theaters, and has amassed a very similar (if hormonally different) cult following. So my guess is that it will be well over $75 million, quite possibly reaching $100 million. Of course, I could be wrong :).

Supermallet 11-15-08 02:46 AM

I predict a very large opening weekend, then a massive drop the next week.

RoboDad 11-15-08 02:58 AM

It will probably drop significantly in the second week, but will it drop again in the third, or turn into another Titanic (which appealed to a similar audience)?

mhg83 11-15-08 07:35 AM

I decided to watch the trailer for the first time out of curiosity. The movie looks like a Direct to video trash. Whats the appeal for this film? The story seems unoriginal like a Romeo and Juliet meets vampires. So is it that teenage girls get wet over the guy characters or something? Is that the appeal for them?

The movie doesn't look that hot from what I saw in the trailer, but I have to admit the concept is very nice. It's an innocent girl that falls in love with the dark side, a vampire. I don't know, I think the whole concept is very cool.

mdc3000 11-15-08 09:47 AM

^Because we've NEVER seen that before.

Yep. Edward is the perfect man, Jacob is the perfect best friend, Carlisle is the perfect father figure...which leads me to believe that there's going to be HUGE backlash over this movie. Right now everyone's excited, but there's no way the film or the performances can live up to expectations. I've read the books and I'm definitely going to see it opening weekend, but I agree that the trailer looks like poop.

HOLY SHIT!! $100 million! Thats a bold statement. We shall see :)

Hu Phan 11-15-08 04:29 PM

This is getting crazy.

There is apparently ticket scalping going on in schools for early showings of this film. My neice indicated that her friend paid $50.00 per ticket to a scalper for four tickets to one of the midnight shows - and she has already had offers of twice that again to sell them on.

I have zero interest personally, but this thing is going to be huge. No question now that The Dark Knight records are going to tumble (sadly.)

Dream on. No fucking way that is going to happen.

Rypro 525 11-16-08 05:37 AM

i will sell my left nut to cancer and give everyone on here a thousand bucks if this breaks The Dark Knight's record. It might do well in certain areas, but i don't think it stands close. Remeber all saying that HSM 3 would break records, it didnt' and neither will this. i predict maybe 40 mil tops opening weekend. Also depends on how Bond does next weekend.

They are huge. Harry Potter>Twilight huge...

I disagree. I know quite a few women who are avid readers and none of them care for the series.

kstublen 11-16-08 08:37 AM

Count me among those that has never even heard of these books. I saw the trailer and thought it looked like utter shit, and yet it appears to be some sort of phenomenon. I read somewhere online the other day that the Soundtrack is #1 or something and the movie hasn't even been released yet.

I hang out with girls/women that read books, and as far as I know none of them have read 'em. I know my teenage little sister hasn't. maybe it's the fact that I don't go to bookstores very often...because I'd like to think that I'm fairly up-to-date on pop culture. I guess I let one slip by me? Are they really that popular?

I'll be interested to see how this does out of my morbid curiosity of the sickening tastes of the younger generation.

If you've never even heard of Twilight, you're not remotely up-to-date with pop culture.

I teach high school; they are that popular.

DonnachaOne 11-16-08 11:16 AM

We're selling out our midnight shows and several of the weekend shows, too.

I do as well and they are popular especially amongst teenage girls. This "fervor" gives me even more reason to avoid the theaters for the next few weeks. In my opinion the movie looks like shite and will only show teenagers that you can churn out product that is worth less than two turds and a good chunk of society will just gobble it up. This type of stuff is a prime example of this generation of teenagers and how I think many are headed in the wrong direction.

yoshimi 11-16-08 01:13 PM

If only one of the actors would have died before it was released you all would be going on and on about how great it is without even having seen it. The Dark Knight is the most overrated movie I have ever seen and while I doubt it will happen I hope Twilight shits all over it.
