Re: The 81st Academy Awards — 2009 Oscar pre-nomination discussion

Just watched "The Duchess" on BD via Netflix. Had this come out in the theaters in the last 4-6 weeks, it would have been higher on the awards radar. Especially for the performances by Knightley and Fiennes. Hopefully the set and costume design won't be forgotten. Nothing comes close in the latter.

We usually get some surprises tomorrow. I don't have a film currently that I'm behind 100% this year, so I'm going to toss out some last minute surprise guesses. I hope things aren't completely by-the-numbers tomorrow morning.

Picture
Benjamin Button, Slumdog, Milk, Frost/Nixon. The Academy chooses Doubt, along with 4 acting nominations, or Gran Torino, showing major Clint love, thus knocking out The Dark Knight.

Director
Fincher, Boyle, Van Sant, Nolan locks. Darren Aronofsky knocks out Howard for the 5th spot.

Actor
Richard Jenkins bumps Brad Pitt. If that happens, the love for Benjamin Button may be wavering a tad.

In Bruges gets nominated for Original Screenplay.

I swear to God if "Gran Torino" gets any nominations, I will blow up the Kodak Theater during the ceremonies.

God I want to see Gran Torino get nominated, not only because I think its worthy, but because if Daytripper's venom for it.

I would also like to see In Bruges get a nom. I'm also pulling for The Wrestler.

Seriously....worthy of what? Best Picture? Actor? Screenplay? I want to know.

And bring your marshmellows.

A Best Picture nomination. Probably not Best Actor.

EDIT: Not that I think it should win, but I could understand a nomination. I didn't like No Country at all last year, but whatever. I don't care enough to fuss about it :)

Do you honestly think this film deserves a Best Picture nomination? And what other films do you think should get that honor? Me, in no particular order:

"The Dark Knight"
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"
"In Bruges"
"Frost/Nixon"
"The Reader"
"Revotionary Road:
"Slumdog Millionaire"
"Milk"
"The Wrestler"
"The Fall"

ALL deserve a Best Picture nominaton over the garbage that is "Gran Torino"

I wouldn't have said it if I didn't. You do realize just because you hated the movie doesn't mean everyone else did, right? Hell, look at everyone that hates Crash! :)

I haven't seen all of those listed, but my favs have been Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire and hope one of those win. And i'd love to see The Wrestler sneak in there, but I doubt that will happen. I liked Gran Torino a lot more then I did Milk, even though I don't have anything particularly bad to say about Milk.

I'm totally with you, man. I seriously don't get what people are seeing with this movie.

Good list, by the way. I love The Fall. Here are a few more:

"Hunger"
"Waltz with Bashir"
"Let the Right One In"
"Wendy and Lucy"
"Doubt"
"Tell No One"
"Happy-Go-Lucky"
"The Visitor"
"Vicky Cristina Barcelona"

I'm not a big fan of Benjamin Button or Frost/Nixon, but I think they're decent enough and a hell of a lot better than Gran Torino. Any nomination for Gran Torino will be a joke. Period. I have your back here.

THANK YOU! And Christ almighty, I like Eastwood. But this is his worst movie IMO. Not only acting, but directing. If it gets any major nominations, it'll be because of his body of work. And not because of this film. "A Perfect World" was such an amazing movie and got zero recognition.
