WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (10/17-10/19) People like "Payne" and "W". But not "Sex".

Here are the estimates for yesterday. W did better than I thought. It's PTA is near that of Max Payne actually. Sex Drive is a huge bomb and should only end up with a bit over $3 million for the weekend. Thats pretty damn bad if you are released in nearly 2500 screens.

1. Max Payne (Fox) - $6.75 million
2. W. (Lionsgate) - $4.3 million
3. The Secret Life of Bees (Fox Searchlight) - $4 million
4. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney) - $3.2 million
5. Body of Lies (Warner Bros) - $2.37 million
6. Eagle Eye (Dreamworks/Paramount) - $2.2 million
7. Quarantine (Sony) - $2 million
8. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (Sony) - $1.18 million
9. Sex Drive (Summit) - $1.1 million
10. The Express (Universal) - $875,000

Well Quarantine fell hard, as expected. Eagle Eye is still hanging in there... wow. I wonder how much Saw V will bank next week?

If Saw V holds true to the past couple of sequels, it should do at least 25 to 27 million.

Max Payne looks horrible, Secret Life of Bees is the biggest surprise.

Sex Drive...meh. No real stars and looks like every other teen comedy.

I say only $17-22 million opening weekend for SAW V. I hope Quarantine hangs in there. That was one heck of a good horror movie. And damn it was actually pretty scary.

Whoa... it's opening against HSM3? If that's the case then I'd say it'll be lucky to get $23m and wind up in 2nd place. Based on the grosses for Saw IV I think the franchise is finally starting to show signs of weakness. It had a good opening, but finished ~$20m less than what Saw III made.

Yeah, this is the calm before the storm... High School Musical 3 and Saw V on the same weekend = Huge Box Office IMO.

Indeed this'll probably the last weekend a movie makes less than $20 million in a weekend for a while. The next 2 weeks will be dominated by HSM. Then Madagascar II. Then Bond. Then Australia.

HSM3 is gonna do $50 million, at the least. Saw V shouldn't be affected too much since its a very different market. Saw could even get a bump from older teens and young adults who are taking younger siblings to HSM3 and don't want to sit through a musical.

Interesting weekend.

Sex Drive looks funny...but I'll just wait for the Blu-ray of it. Nothing this weekend has me rushing out to a Theater. May see Saw V though next week depending on reviews.

Sex Drive was great, its a shame it did that bad. I don't think there was that big of a marketing push for it though, so it isn't that surprising.

I'm a huge Saw fan and didn't even know it was out next week. Haven't even seen a full trailer or commercials.

Maybe it's because I haven't been paying attention, but were people expecting W to be big or something? I've barely heard of it and don't think i've seen any commercials for it.

Depends on what channels you watch.

Comedy Central? You saw a lot of ads for Sex Drive and W at different times.
BET, MTV and Lifetime? Secret Life of Bees (Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Dakota Fanning.. that has a built-in audience.)
"Guy" channels? Max Payne

I hope we get [REC] on R1 at some point, Quarantine looks somewhat grating by comparison.
