Best Gangster/Mob movies of all-time

OK, like always, I did a search for such a thread and I did not find anything. So if one exists, nothing showed up on my search. And mods, please merge. Anyway, I read the most interesting review on the newly released "Casino" on Blu-Ray (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies...88&show=review), and I kind of agree. That said, what would you say the 5 best gangster/mob movies are. My vote goes to:

1) "The Godfather Part II"
2) "The Godfather"
3) "Goodfellas"
4) "Casino"
5) "Bugsy"

chris_sc77 10-16-08 06:44 PM

1. Once Upon A Time In America
2. Casino
3. Godfather 1/2/3
4. Road To Perdition
5. Miller's Crossing

I never enjoyed The Godfather movies. I'll go with Goodfellas. The rest i'm not too sure about.

 That would be my ranking as well
Although I've never seen Bugsy so I can't really say about that one. But 1-4 are ranked accordingly, IMO.

Well, #5 was a tough choice. I know "Bugsy" is not one of the *best* gangster/mob movies. But it's one of my favorites. chris_sc77 definitely chose films that were better. And believe me, narrowing it down to just five was very tough. You also have "Donnie Brasco", "The Untouchables", "The Departed", "Lock Stock" and "Snatch", "Scarface". To name a few. All favorites of mine. But I just found "Bugsy" to be one of the better film noirs. Up there with "L.A. Confidential". And possibly Barry Levinson's best effort.

No really a mob movie but I always thought Roy Scheider was a bad ass character in Romeo is Bleeding.

MaxMFP 10-16-08 09:55 PM

The Godfather I and II
Goodfellas
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Miller's Crossing

I've always enjoyed Donnie Brasco.

Al Pacino's performance is utterly amazing and probably his last subtle one.

No love for "Johnny Dangerously" or "Oscar"? ;)

COTTON CLUB is a good one.

coli 10-17-08 06:34 AM

1. The Godfather (The greatest movie of all-time, along with the greatest cast: Brando, Pacino, Caan, Duvall, Talia Shire, Cazale, etc)

2. Goodfellas (Marty's best movie)

3. Untouchables (Sean Connery steals the movie)

4. The Godfather, Part 2 (love the flashbacks, still think the Pacino parts are overrated)

5. Donnie Brasco (very underrated)

Dr Mabuse 10-17-08 08:38 AM

'The Yakuza Papers: Battles Without Honor & Humanity'.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this, it's one of the best series of films ever.. Hell it's from the autobiography of the lead character, it's all based on eyewitness accounts and is highly accurate to actual events like 'Goodfellas'. That box set is one of my favorite DVD releases too.

'Infernal Affairs'.

"American Me' was a good film, and pretty hard core as compared to most as to the reality of gangster stuff.

I really like 'Dillinger' with Warren Oates.

'True Romance' IS "gangster", and what a great movie.

Another gangster film I really like that I didn't see mentioned is 'Brother' by Takeshi Kitano. I really like that film.

def. of gangster is member of gang of criminals. neither applies or else you would have a whole nother thread. assassins don't equate to gangster.

I would say the cops in Leon would qualify as a gang of criminals.

They do if they're mob hitmen -- which is the case in Le Samourai, Ghost Dog, Leon, and The Killer.
