Best Gangster/Mob movies of all-time
OK, like always, I did a search for such a thread and I did not find anything. So if one exists, nothing showed up on my search. And mods, please merge. Anyway, I read the most interesting review on the newly released "Casino" on Blu-Ray (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies...88&show=review), and I kind of agree. That said, what would you say the 5 best gangster/mob movies are. My vote goes to:
1) "The Godfather Part II" 2) "The Godfather" 3) "Goodfellas" 4) "Casino" 5) "Bugsy" |
1. Once Upon A Time In America
2. Casino 3. Godfather 1/2/3 4. Road To Perdition 5. Miller's Crossing |
I never enjoyed The Godfather movies. I'll go with Goodfellas. The rest i'm not too sure about.

1. Goodfellas
2. Casino 3. The Untouchables 4. Scarface 5. Carlito's Way |
No really a mob movie but I always thought Roy Scheider was a bad ass character in Romeo is Bleeding.
|
The Godfather I and II
Goodfellas The Killing of a Chinese Bookie Miller's Crossing Once Upon a Time in America Scarface (1932) Mean Streets The King of New York Casino Gotti |
I've always enjoyed Donnie Brasco.
Al Pacino's performance is utterly amazing and probably his last subtle one. |
No love for "Johnny Dangerously" or "Oscar"? ;)

The Long Good Friday
State of Grace Eastern Promises The Krays Mona Lisa Rififi Sonatine Graveyard of Honor The Killer Touchez pas au Grisbi Le Samourai The Funeral Le Cercle Rouge Little Caeser White Heat Branded to Kill Youth of the beast Shoot the Piano Player Carlito's Way Miller's Crossing A Bronx Tale |
Some of my favorites...
American Gangster Casino Donnie Brasco Godfather Godfather Pt. II Goodfellas Road To Perdition Scarface Snatch |
1) Godfather
2) Godfather II 3) Godfather III 4) Scarface 5) Goodfellas 6) Miller's Crossing |
COTTON CLUB is a good one.
|
1. The Godfather (The greatest movie of all-time, along with the greatest cast: Brando, Pacino, Caan, Duvall, Talia Shire, Cazale, etc)
2. Goodfellas (Marty's best movie) 3. Untouchables (Sean Connery steals the movie) 4. The Godfather, Part 2 (love the flashbacks, still think the Pacino parts are overrated) 5. Donnie Brasco (very underrated) |
'The Yakuza Papers: Battles Without Honor & Humanity'.
I'm surprised no one mentioned this, it's one of the best series of films ever.. Hell it's from the autobiography of the lead character, it's all based on eyewitness accounts and is highly accurate to actual events like 'Goodfellas'. That box set is one of my favorite DVD releases too. 'Infernal Affairs'. "American Me' was a good film, and pretty hard core as compared to most as to the reality of gangster stuff. I really like 'Dillinger' with Warren Oates. 'True Romance' IS "gangster", and what a great movie. Another gangster film I really like that I didn't see mentioned is 'Brother' by Takeshi Kitano. I really like that film. |
Obvious choices aside (Scorsese flicks, Godfather, etc.) since we all agree those are the tops:
Le Cercle Rogue Borsalino & Co. Little Caesar Youth of the Beast Road to Perdition Mean Streets Bob le Flambeur |
Yojimbo
Godfather I and II Goodfellas Le Cercle Rouge Bob le Flambeur Rififi Miller's Crossing White Heat Little Ceasar Scarface (1932) |
The Long Good Friday and Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai.

I would say the cops in Leon would qualify as a gang of criminals. |
