THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY (remake) (Paul W.S. Anderson; 2009)

"A remake of "The Long Good Friday" with the original London gangland story transposed to Miami. The original was directed by John Mackenzie and featured Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren as part of the ensemble cast. Harold, a prosperous English gangster, is about to close a lucrative new deal when bombs start showing up in very inconvenient places. A mysterious syndicate is trying to muscle in on his action, and Harold wants to know who they are. He finds out soon enough, and bloody mayhem ensues."

Ugh. I really liked the original but this could be a terrible idea. Espescially with who is at the helm. Thats right Paul W.S. Anderson (AVP, Soldier, Resident Evil, etc.) is writing and directing this.
I could possible be interested if they find an actor who could properly fill the great Bob Hoskins' shoes.

Are you sure it's not Paul T. Anderson? Please tell us you're not sure. Please.

Dr Mabuse 10-16-08 05:57 PM

It won't even resemble the original.

I need to get my copy out and watch that film again.

I think that was Pierce Brosnan's major screen debut there right?

riotinmyskull 10-16-08 06:20 PM

the original is a masterpiece and still stands up well today...the new one will be shitty and feature rap/r&b stars.

Someone needs to stop Anderson. He makes Brett Ratner looks compentent.

Arpeggi 10-18-08 10:30 AM

Fail.

Fixed. At least Anderson made the immensely entertaining (and stupid) Death Race.

Fixed.

There already was a kick-ass Death Race film. I didn't need Paul Anderson's hack-ass giving us his cliched crapfest. It sucked a big one.

I will admit Anderson has one solid film under his belt: Event Horizon. Ratner wishes he could make something half as good. Well, some could argue Red Dragon is half as good... but you get my point.

Let's just agree they both need to be stopped.

^Why dont we stop people like Raja Gosnell (B.H. Chihuahua, Scooby Doo 1/2) , Alex Kendrick (Fireproof), or Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield 2) who are incredibly talentless filmmakers before going after directors who are at least competent.

You answered your own question. They're cardboard, filler, yes-men directors there for a paying gig. They aren't trying to impress their personal style onto filmgoers or even into their own films. These two guys are. That's why.

Exactly! And Ratner made "Red Dragon". Not so stupid and a very good companion to the original "Silence of the Lambs". And what a cast!

Red Dragon is good. Manhunter makes it look bad.

"Manhunter" is one of the worst dated movies I've ever seen. Great at the time. Now? Not so easy to watch. For me anyway. I expected "Dragon" to be a disaster. And it was anything but.

Red Dragon was competent, not great. But Manhunter is very dated.

Since the IRA is no longer an active threat, what are they going to do -- make a film about a gangster who goes against al Qaeda?

The Bus 10-20-08 10:42 AM

No, it's in Miami. So my guess is Colombian cartels.

I'm not wasting a penny on this.

chris_sc77 10-20-08 03:09 PM

Any guesses on who they are gonna get to play the lead?

Probably his wife, blowing shit up with a machine gun. Zombies also likely to appear.

When did Robert Rodriguez take over?

starseed1981 10-21-08 02:39 PM

Epic fail.
