Best Richard Donner Movie

Which movie would you consider Richard Donner's best, or your personal favorite?

starman9000 10-16-08 07:18 AM

The Goonies

Embarrassing admission: For a long time I thought he directed Help! because I knew the director of Help! directed Superman II (and his name was Richard). It wasn't until the Richard Donner cut was released that I realized my mistake.

Tough call between The Goonies and Lethal Weapon 2.

Absolutely! Followed very closely by "Superman".

I chose Superman: The Movie, but I'm surprised by all the votes for Lethal Weapon. I consider Lethal Weapon 2 one of those rare exceptions where a sequel is better than its original.

"Diplomatic Immunityyyyyyy!"

Well Lethal Weapon 2 was when it went to more of a comedy. The first was more hardcore action.

Maverick!

Just kidding - it's Lethal Weapon.

Hokeyboy 10-16-08 02:57 PM

Surprised that people think Lethal Weapon 2 was better than the original.

The first LETHAL WEAPON was, I thought, compelling both as an action movie as well as a character piece. It balanced the big crazy insane set pieces with some good performances from Gibson and Glover, as well as taking the time to establish both characters as fairly-well fleshed out individuals.

The sequels were all just overblown cartoons, caricatures, noise. I liked 2 a lot for what it was, it couldn't compare to the first at all in terms of overall quality. 3 & 4 were just rubbish.

My vote is for Superman: The Movie. That movie is just a full-blown pop slice of Americana and popcorn moviegoing at its finest.

The Goonies

FRwL 10-16-08 03:05 PM

Superman, also the greatest superhero movie ever made.

DthRdrX 10-16-08 03:28 PM

Either Superman or Goonies.

kms_md 10-16-08 04:06 PM

omen, followed by lethal weapon 2 and superman.

God help me, its 'Scrooged'. I love the satire. I love the cinematography. And all of the performances. Its bloated to be sure, but it holds a special place in my heart.

clckworang 10-16-08 05:17 PM

I'll cast my vote for The Omen.

bunkaroo 10-16-08 05:25 PM

Scrooged for me. Watch it every year. Goonies is a close 2nd.

GoldenJCJ 10-16-08 07:05 PM

The Goonies for sheer nostalgia.

old-boo-radley 10-16-08 07:19 PM

Picking between The Omen and The Goonies is like picking which child of mine dies. The Omen is the better movie, but The Goonies is more fun.

DeputyDave 10-16-08 07:58 PM

I'm sorry but I love me some Ladyhawk.

Cardsfan111 10-16-08 08:34 PM

I could watch Superman anytime, so it's my favorite from the list. And I think it's the best as well.

DieselsDen 10-16-08 09:16 PM

I agree with those who like WEAPON 2 more than the original. LETHAL WEAPON 2 was even more entertaining than BATMAN and INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, which were the main competitors for that Summer of 1989. It's fun from beginning to end, and Joe Pesci was terrific in his supporting role. However, I do think that they are generally junkie movies for a genre as serious as crime. I don't think they are nearly as compelling as Friedkin's TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA or Michael Mann's HEAT.

I voted SUPERMAN because it truly is an epic fantasy, flaws and all. It is still the gold standard as far as comic book movies are concerned

Agreed on Lethal Weapon. The first one is amazing. My buddy and I have been debating for years Lethal Weapon vs Die Hard. I love both but put Lethal Weapon on top. I love the scene where Rigs says all you gotta do is not miss. Bad ass.
