Favorite Peckinpah film
Which of Bloody Sam's films is your favorite? I expect The Wild Bunch to dominate this poll, but Ride the High Country has more of an emotional resonance for me. I've seen The Wild Bunch at least a dozen times, but I am only recently beginning to discover the subtle beauty of Ride the High Country. A tremendously moving, lyrical film.
Cross of Iron Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid The Getaway Straw Dogs The Ballad of Cable Hogue The Wild Bunch Major Dundee Ride the High Country Other - for all you Convoy, Killer Elite and Osterman Weekend fans out there! |
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid is mine, along with holding a place in my all-time top 10.
Alfredo Garcia would be second, followed by Ride the High Country, Cross of Iron and the Getaway. I've seen everything he directed (film-wise) except for the Killer Elite and Osterman is the only one I dislike. He was one of the best. |
I love Cross of Iron, The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid.
Although not his best film, Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia is my favorite. I haven't seen Ride the High Country or Straw Dogs. |
I've only seen two (Straw Dogs and The Getaway). I liked the Getaway a lot and thought Straw Dogs was horrible.
= J |
The Wild Bunch is part of my "Holy Trilogy" of westerns along with The Searchers and Once Upon a Time in the West. They're not only my three favorite westerns, but my three favorite films as well.
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is one of my ten favorite films and I love Pat Garrett and Straw Dogs. The only Peckinpah film I don't enjoy immensely is Convoy. |
I picked Bunch, but "Al" continues to rise high on the list the more I watch it.
|
Went with the Wild Bunch, but I also especially liked Cable Hogue and Junior Bonner.
|
The Wild Bunch
The Ballad of Cable Hogue is his most under appreciated film, imo. I have grown to love it after repeat viewings. |
Pat Garret and Billy The Kid
Never get tired of the film, could watch it everyday. |
I've only seen two: Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs - went with Wild Bunch in the poll.
|
Top 5:
1. Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid 2.The Getaway 3. The Ballad of Cable Hogue 4. Straw Dogs 5. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia |
My top 5:
- The Wild Bunch (my favorite American western) - Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia - The Ballad of Cable Hogue - Straw Dogs - Osterman Weekend |
Cause we gotta great big convoy, rockin' through the night!
But seriously....The Wild Bunch. |
The Wild Bunch may be his best movie, but I voted for Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. But you really can't go wrong with most of the ones listed. Ride the High Country certainly wouldn't be a bad option either.
|
Ride the High Country, without question. What a beautiful, sad, magnificent film. Although to be fair, I've liked most of what I've watched from him thus far (although I haven't warmed to Pat Garrett yet, and Alfredo is high on my "must see" list at the moment).
|
I think The Wild Bunch is excellent, but I've gotta come clean and admit how much I love Convoy.
|
Haven't met a bad Peckinpah film yet (hence my username :D). Alfredo Garcia is easily my favorite, Wild Bunch, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, and Straw Dogs very close behind.
|
Since it was mutilated by studio editors in it's original release, I have to fully disclaim my choice as the Turner Classic Movies Restored Edition of 'Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid' at the long run time.
Some stories off the set. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...ments/link.gif Then probably 'The Wild Bunch', but again the Director's Cut not the original release. For the same reasons as above, studio meddling. 'Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia' is a spectacular film. I don't think it gets the credit it's due. 'Ride The High Country', AFAIK, is the most widely praised and universally loved Packinpah picture there is right? |
1. Ride The High Country
2. The Wild Bunch 3. The Balled of Cable Hogue 4. Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid 5. The Getaway |

-Original Theatrical cut -Turner Preview Version -"Uncut" Director's Cut -Restored Edition Some of the differences I can point out: -Chisum scene (Only found in the Turner Preview Version) -Scene with Garrett's wife (Only found in the Restored Version) The only difference I can spot between the Director's Cut and the Restored Edition is that the lyrics for "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is heard on one version, but not on the other. Any more differences between all the other versions? |

I've seen all 14 of his films...and if you want to include some of his work as a writer then I've seen VILLA RIDES and THE GLORY GUYS too. Since we're talking "favorite" (as opposed to "best"), the choice is easy for me...Major Dundee (with the original soundtrack...and I happen to like the "idiotic musical sting").
|
Cross of Iron, though Dundee, Straw Dogs and The Bunch are also very good.
|
1. Straw Dogs
2. The Wild Bunch |
