The Apartment

I think Lawrence of Arabia will end up the winner but The Apartment is such a great film I could watch over and over again.

I'm sure Lawrence of Arabia will win, but I also picked the Apartment.

The Apartment is great (and so are Tom Jones, A Man for All Seasons, and Midnight Cowboy, for that matter), but there's just no comparing to Lawrence of Arabia.

Very close call between Arabia and Apartment, even though they're completely different kinds of movies... but Arabia for me.

Worst, I dunno, but least impressive winner has to be In the Heat of the Night -- The Graduate or Bonnie and Clyde should've easily won over that.

Lawrence of Arabia hands down winner and champ and O'Toole was so robbed that year at the Oscars.

It's surprisingly not that great overall. One that deserves at least a mention is A Man for All Seasons which I consider pretty great. But I have to go with Lawrence.

Worst: Oliver! Over The Lion in Winter? What were they thinking?

Like a couple of others have said, I think Lawrence of Arabia is a virtual lock to win, but I just had to vote for The Apartment, such a great movie.

This will certainly dominate abe55's upcoming worst thread. Abe, how about including the percentages of previous best/worst winners in your first post, as well as links to previous polls?

Picking between LOA and The Apartment is unfair, but I chose The Apartment, a film I've seen a hundred times and could see a hundred more.

Amazing decade for Non-English language films :

Andrei Rublev
Contempt
Au hasard Balthazar
The Battle of Algiers
Le Samourai
L'avventura
Breathless
Through a Glass Darkly
Viridiana
L'eclisse
Harakiri
Jules and Jim
8 1/2

Tom Jones was not a very good movie and quite unworthy of even a nomination let alone the award. And it hasn't aged well at all. Maybe a **/**** then and **/**** now. (The one thing it had going for it from my point of view was that I was able to get in to see what was then an "adults only" movie when I was 16 - seems rather amazing now that such a tame movie was then considered adults only.) Compare Tom Jones with the masterful Barry Lyndon to see just how much better that "type" of film can be. But Oliver! is abysmal and never even had anything worthwhile to begin with to age from. I think the other three musical winners (in order, My Fair Lady (my second favorite musical after All That Jazz), West Side Story, even The Sound of Music) were all immeasurably better.

My opinion, of course.

Lawrence is definitely the most epic on that list, but my favorite to watch from there would have to be In The Heat Of The Night.
