Most Overrated Martin Scorsese Movie
Unless you love every single movie the man has directed, there has to be one movie of his you at least dislike, or feel gets way more praise than it deserves. Vote for which one it is.

Sorry, not one.

The Departed.
Was a really good movie with a dumb ending. And the rat on the balcony really was really awful, that shot shouldn't have made it past the screenings. The supporting cast in the movie were incredible, but there two leads were just average. |
Well, for me it's The Departed. Besides the fact that I hate it, it also ranks as the 45th best movie of all-time on IMDb, almost 30 spots ahead of Raging Bull.
|
I love Casino, but it seems a bit off. Some of the dialogue is especially awkward and almost plays like the actors were making it up as they went along.

Toss up between Gangs of New York and Casino for me.

"The rat symbolizes obviousness!" |
Gangs of New York for me.
|
GANGS OF NEW YORK is not overrated because, let's face it, it was never held in that high regard in the first place.
I'm going with The Departed, and I enjoy the movie a whole heck of a lot. But BEST PICTURE of 2006? Hmmm no. That was an "It's about TIME!" award but considering that it's Marty, I'm willing to look the other way. |

I can't answer, Nothing is overrated that he has had his hand on
|
Gangs of New York
Besides the excellent performance by DDL, the film is not really all that. |
No answer.

GHOST, for Chrissakes. It was a mercy nomination and we all know it. The film received mixed to positive reviews, but hardly the glowing praise one would expect for a Best Picture nominee. It was in fact the least highest reviewed film of the group, according to RT. I mean, "The Hours" was better reviewed and does anyone even remember that film anymore? Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - 96% The Pianist - 95% Chicago - 87% The Hours - 80% Gangs of New York - 76% |
Goodfellas.
|
I love them all but if I had to answer I would say The Aviator. Very good movie but the least impressive of the bunch. Marty is the man.
|
I voted Mean Streets. It was OK, but not something I'll watch as many times as his other films. You could tell he was developing his style with that movie (thank God, because Boxcar Bertha was ridiculous), but it just didn't have the "umph" his other stuff has.
|
I also voted for the departed. While I like it, It just comes as a saccharine version of a Scorsese flick. Give me sugar Marty....Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and those are just three he should have won for. Someone said it already....This was a "it's time" bullshit.
|
Voted "Mean Streets" because it's the only Scorsese film I've seen where my reaction was "That's it?" That was the film heralded as the appearance of a new genius? I love Scorsese, but was kind of bored with this one.
|
I don't like Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, heck I think pretty much all his recent work stinks.
I ended up going with The Departed because it won best pic. |
Bringing Out the Dead
|
"Shine a Light." Just a half-assed concert film, with too many celebrity guest appearances (Christina Aguilera --- really?) and a setting that doesn't reflect what a real Rolling Stones show is like. Jeez, I've had more people at a party in my apartment than there were on the main floor of that theater.

Some of his movies were never that greatly heralded, certainly not all 10 or so of the ones listed here. Especially Gangs Of New York, Mean Streets, Aviator, Christ..
At least in personal terms of what films of his they're most to talk about and who loves certain films of his the most. The ones I listed hardly ever come up in casual conversation so I don't see how they can be over-rated persion. |
